5811g v. 5740 upgrade?

I have the 5726 1A-0014. Love the annual calendar, very functional watch. I'd rather have a nautilus in WG. So I'm thinking about selling and 'upgrading' to either the 5811G or the 5740G.

For me, going from steel to WG is an upgrade. I like the legibility and simplicity of the 5811G, I like the PC on the 5740, but it's not that practical from a functional standpoint because it's not easy to read and has no second hand.

The new bracelet with adjustable clasp is an 'upgrade' on both.

So I guess it all comes down to what I think an 'upgrade' is- does anyone want to chime in? Thanks

You seem to be leaning towards the 5811. In a sports watch, I think the 5811 works far better than a PC complication, especially a PC with no second's hand. At some point you can add a PC on a strap.

If you could, the 5740 is amazing. Almost the same thickness as the 5811, but has all the qualities of the 5811 + a perpetual calendar. Not sure what's the difference in price between the two after trading in the 5726. That might be the deciding factor.

If you plan on wearing the watch frequently, I would go for the 5740.
You mentioned the lack of a seconds hand, but remember the 3700 didn’t have one either.
One thing I love about the 5712 is it also lacks a seconds hand and it makes the watch more legible at a glance.
I would guess you’d get the same effect from a 5740.
The micro adjustable bracelets are big improvements on both.
Both 5811 and 5740 will be pricey and in the long run, the more complicated the watch is the better it’ll keep its value in my opinion.
Personally I’m not a fan of Patek making these watches in white gold instead of steel.
To me it moves away from the original design but I get why the do it: higher msrp and easier to finish gold than steel.

Hands down the 5740, for not much more (~40-50k) on the secondary market you receive a QP and also that gorgeous electric blue dial. Would be an easy choice for me.

It's perspective....I personally don't see the upgrade in going to 5811g from a 5726a but if precious metal is that different to you so be it. Keep in mind Patek makes far more gold watches versus stainless as a brand.

I would keep the 5726. The day, date, moon phase, and month functions are far superior rather than going to a precious metal date only watch.

I agree with 5740, it is an amazing watch and defintely the favorite and most go to in my collection. Having tried on the 5811 I was actually underwhelmed and enjoy the 5711. I do agree though that although I didn't think the seconds hand was needed, I miss being able to tell if the watch is actually running since the winder I recieved with it from Patek doesn't seem that reliable.

5811, and with the price differential between that and the 5740 you can get a 5960 or a 5905 and have an annual calendar chronograph to play with the complications.

i would personally keep the 5726-014 but if you had to upgrade, i'd go for 5740

I have been trying to do the same thing/. Really want the t740 but the ask has been too high. Best offer I have had is my 5712 and my 5726 white plus 40k for a 5740. The secondary bid is far different from the secondary offer side these days.

5740 as to me Patek is synonymous with complications and this is a situation where aesthetically it was well executed. I think you’ll get bored with the 5811.

I have the 5726 too, and material-wise, a white gold and a steel watch doesn't give me much difference except for weight and being more scratch prone for the 5811. IMO, 5811 is a down grade from a 5726. You are getting a plain jane watch that just happens to be in white gold, versus the annual calendar, a classic Patek complication, in the most iconic patek watch, in steel. History will tell you that Stainless steel watches for patek >> gold ones, simply because they are rarer and more daily friendly

however, I feel the 5811 to be too empty of a dial. The watch is slightly bigger than the 5711, which makes the middle space extra open. 5740 is an all-time great but it lacks a seconds hand.

If I were to pick out of those 2, 5740>>> 5811.

might be a dumb question but this has been bugging me for a bit... and the few times i tried to google it i couldn't find a quick definitive answer. Could some explain to me if there is a difference between a perpetual and quantieme perpetual?

I want to think there is but couldn't find the answer on my own. Thank you forums in advance :)

Quantieme is French for day/date and I believe the term quantieme perpetual is just the French way of saying perpetual calendar? I’ll let someone who knows something correct me if wrong lol

Well I own the 5726 blue and I personally think that going to 5740 from the 5726 will be an unnecessary upgrade while trading to 5811g will be a certain downgrade.

QP and perpetual calendar are synonymous, I believe the use of QP originated from AP in their perpetual calendars.

My answer would be 5740 as well.

I am not interested in 5811/1G just like I don't like 5726 blue for a number of reasons. I much prefer 5711/1A over those two. The basic WG Nautilus that has me intrigued is 3711.

No dumb questions :) Quantième Perpetuel (QP) in French means Perpetual Calendar.
French is spoken in Switzerland, hence why a lot of original complication names were French (Tourbillon = whirlwind...). It has then been translated. A "quantième" is the French definition of the date number.

Hence a "perpetual" doesn't exist (as a complication name), but Perpetual Calendar (EN) and Quantième Perpetuel (FR) do.

You also have Quantième simple (simple date) and Quantième Annuel (Annual Calendar).

Well, you've well summed-up your concerns. Do you use the watch regularly? Then the setting wouldn't really be a problem but I guess if you mention it, it is...

I have a 5712 but thought for a very long while adding a 5711 because it was the purest version in the aesthetical sense, hence the most elegant for the Nautilus line-up that I love wearing with suits.

Therefore, I personally came not to value the Nautilus models considering their complication (more complicated usually more appealing to me). The 5711 could compete with a 5990 for instance (to me).

So I would totally consider a 5811G over a 5740G. The dial color and the way it works with WG (that is also more appealing to me than steel, visually) is fantastic. Considering the 5740's pricepoint, I would go for 5811G but if price wasn't a problem, then I would still prefer the perpetual calendar. If I already had (or planned to get) a perpetual calendar in the classical line-up, I would I think get the 5811.

Though call (budget aside).

Personally, I'd keep the 5726 and buy a 5270G or P in lieu of the 5740.

That said, if you wear your Nautilus nearly all the time, then there's a decent rationale in going all-in with the 5740.
