Very talented OP!

Wish I had the patience to tackle stuff like this. I am afraid mine would look like complete garbage if I even attempted haha

I'm excited because Orion had cage radio aerials. I've made them before and the detail it adds is a lot of fun

Not my photos, this is HMS Tiger, one off battlecruiser from WWI.

I always have enough material on hand to make an extra or two but I always make what I need. That doesn't mean I don't loose things haha.

For those parts that absolutely can't be replaced, I keep them under glass locked in glass cabinet.

Well, this about concludes HMS Montagu. Her flag has been painted and added.

Not much left to say about her, it was a fanatic build without even a small hickup. I can't complain there.

The last battleship built before the revolutionary HMS Dreadnought, a ship which kicked of the naval arms race culminating in WWI. Montagu was the last of her kind

The flag was painted by me

Beautiful Joe, and now I have a stupid question (from an ex Navy guy no less). You say the Mon was the last battleship before the revolutionary Dreadnaughts, what made the "Dreads" so much of an improvement?

Thanks!!!

Ship's before Dreadnought carried a mixed caliber of guns and had reciprocating steam engines. The Duncan class battleships, of which Montagu was a member, and the preceding King Edward VII class didn't carry a mixed armament but only 4 12" rifles, and 2 reciprocating engines. Dreadnought was powered by 4 parsons steam turbines, and carried 10 12" rifles. No mixed caliber guns, either. Dreadnought was also 100' longer than the Duncan class, had better armor too.

Dreadnought wasn't an evolutionary step forward, she was a quantum leap. The second Dreadnought entered service, every Battleship yet built was obsolete.

It's interesting to note the US Navy designed a pair of battleships before Dreadnought which were on par. They were started before Dreadnought but not finished until months after. USS South Carolina and USS Michigan. Only one had turbines, the other had reciprocating engines. The USN was evaluating turbines. Had one entered service before Dreadnought, this type of warship might have been called "Carolinas" or "Michigans". As patriotic as that would be, Dreadnought is a far better name for this type of ship. It's an old English word from the phrase "fear god, and dread nought".

So Montagu was a pre-Dreadnought, Dreadnought was a Dreadnought, HMS Orion was a Super-Dreadnought (first British ship to mount superfiring 13.5in guns in a 25,000 ton hull), after that you get into the Fast Treaty Battleships like USS North Carolina, Littorio, Scharnhorst. The WW2 Battleships like Bismarck, Yamato, Vanguard, Iowa mark the end of the evolution. They're classified informally as fast battleships

Excellent Info Joe, thanks I am a (very) amateur WWII historian, and one ship class I find interesting is the Yamato class from Japan. If memory serves me, the two in the class were the Yamato and the Mushashi. What I find interesting is that during the era where aircraft carriers replaced the Battleship as the front line warship, the Yamato sported the biggest guns ever placed on a ship, 18". If that had ever faced off against an Iowa class..... what an epic battle that would have been.

There's a discussion on one of Joe's other threads. Iowa class had much better radar assisted fire control and the 16" guns had equal penetrative power with the 18" guns. The Japanese would have been lucky to hit a fast Iowa BB at max range, whereas the Iowa's would have been scoring hits at the same range.

The Japanese didn't have particularly good damage control and there were design weaknesses in their armor belts. The US armor was tight and the US Navy had excellent damage control response.

So, while the 18" guns were superior on paper, the sum of the ship's capabilities favored the Iowa's.

Iowas fire control outclassed Yamato by a generation. I say Iowa wins almost every time, barring some strange twist of fate.

More done on Orion.

The hull is finished, mostly. Turned brass barrels added to the turrets.

Below are some photos of Orion. The last one is all 4 Orion class battleships in one shot. Orion, Conqueror, Monarch, and Thunderer in that order

The heavy lifting of the airbrush is done, now I just have to cut in with a brush and paint all the details.

On areas that will have to be brush painted like all the deck details, I only put down one coat of primer, this way the deck teak color acts as a second coat of primer, this way I don't have a loss of detail.

[url=https://postimg.org/image/td0x8t59p/]

After it's all been touched up, it's time for a wash to bring out the shadows on the hull and deck. Then my favorite, weathering. Ships at sea accumulate rust very quickly, and while Royal Navy ships of this era, 1912, never looked dingy, they would accumulate surface rust from the water wearing away paint or scratches.

Some updated photos. I have a few items left, bust most of the work is done. The display case arrived today so the next photos will likely be the final finished ship.
