Dunkirk. What did you think of the movie?

The cinematography was very impressive. Really liked the aerial shots. As best I could tell the gear and equipment seemed appropriate for the the period.

But taken as a whole . . . not so much. One would need to understand the history behind the movie to really appreciate it.

It did not seem to tell the story as a whole very well.

And the background sounds!?! Not music, I mean sounds. Seemed more appropriate to a slasher/haunted house/mystery kind of film. Distracting!

Overall I'd give it a 5 out of 10.

Your take?

Nolan made only passing reference to Churchill so as not to "confuse" the millennials in the audience, ridiculous!

I liked the film.....it was a different take, if you want a more traditional version, see Dunkirk from 1958.

I loved it. My wife not so much.

I look forward to watching it again to be honest. The first scene when the bombers are diving the beach is epic! Honestly it keeps a good pace the whole way through.

To me it was more of a look from a soldiers perspective than a big picture piece. I like that.

Didn't see it but I liked his previous films, know very well the history behind it, but I understand he didn't put a lot in it, can't expect most people to know the story and details of WWII. Will most definitely go see it

Saw it. Liked it. Good movie for sure, but not the epic I was expecting - maybe it was overhyped?

Edit: music and cinematography was terrific though

Do yourself a favor and sit close and center to the screen! It's really an encapsulating experience

I would have preferred IMAX but opted to use the local theatre with reclining leather chairs instead

Haven't seen the remake but the original Dunkirk is definitely worth watching. Jean Paul Belmondo survives Dunkirk wondering why he lived through it while most of his colleagues perished. He then goes AWOL and meets/falls in love with a French farm girl. He eventually decides to return to England in order to rejoin their fighting forces but gets killed at the end of the movie. Ironic and sad.

Love Nolan films but not this one. More like a documentary on the history channel. No character development and hardly any dialogue.

Interesting Wes that's essentially how my wife felt. She actually commented "why isn't anyone talking" lol I said "I don't care, this is awesome"

I was engrossed by the spectacle.

That was clearly Nolan's intention.

How about a spoiler alert next time BC? Sounds like it might have been worth checking out. Somewhat disappointed in the current offering I must admit.

Wrong film, you're thinking of Weekend At Dunkirk, the film I mentioned was thec1958 Dunkirk

I loved the film, but I know the history behind it very well.

I would disagree as far as character development, but think it was very done very subtly done. I think the film is very much worth the time.

In Nolan's own words (no spoiler alert required):

"The empathy for the characters has nothing to do with their story. I did not want to go through the dialogue to tell the story of my characters. The problem is not who they are, who they claim to be, or where they come from. The only question I was interested in was: Will they get out of it? Will they be killed by the next bomb while trying to join the mole? Or will they be crushed by a boat crossing?”

Cool. Now Tony64 and GB-man can check out the 1958 original Dunkirk without any reservations. In retrospect, I recall that the movie I was referring to came out during the early 1960s and was a French film. It was very moving to watch this beautiful French girl pleading with John Paul Belmondo not to go back to England after they had established an idyllic life together in the French countryside far removed from the ravages of war. Her role was played by the stunning Catherine Spaak.

Not impressed - the Audio was excellent except the irritating background music, cinematography impressive too but after really looking forward to it the movie did nothing for me 4/10

The whole story of Dunkirk is incredible. A shame Nolan took that approach to what could have been a great movie.

I liked it, didn't love it.

The score was a bit nerve wracking, honestly reminded me of Stress by Justice.

The aerial sequences were pretty cool and the water scenes were vertigo inducing.

I liked the Omega watch that Tom Hardy was wearing.

All in all, I'd say 7/10 for me.

We don't need spoiler alerts for these films, we all know the outcome, ze Germans got their ass handed to them.

Haven't seen it yet but I am a fan of Nolan's. As long as it doesn't turn out to all be a dream it should be alright. Memento is still tops for me.

This probably explains why movies pertaining to Custer's Last Stand always seem to have the same ending.

Haven't seen the movie. If the movie didn't focus much on French army's role as said below in the link below, then its woeful. Their contribution was immense, suffered way more casualties. Tens of thousands fought till the bitter end, thereby giving time for the majority to leave.
