Why Air King is such an unpopular reference?

I have a DJ36 as my daily, Sub and Exp 1 as my weekender. A friend of mine just picked up an Air King and I was trying it on. It has such a non-conventional Rolex dial and I am thinking to pick one up for myself. Just wondering why it is not a popular model among members and do you think it is good idea to rotate the AK with my Sub for the weekend and my DJ will rotate with the Exp I as my daily?

I get that people feel that the dial is busy. But I feel that this is the one area I think it sets itself apart from the others. I’m also thinking of picking one up to use as a daily. I like the “unrolex” like factor

Unpopular. The makings of a future collectible? My guess is there aren’t that many out there. You have nothing to lose by picking one up, especially if you like it.

That’s the exact reason that I am thinking of getting one. Compare to the Milgauss with the same case and movement, it is such a good deal!

Too much going on with the dial. Older Air King's were better.

It's a lazy release imo.

Other than the green hands it is all resued parts from either the milguass or the explorer 1. Pilots use GMTs now a days not this style watch.

If only they replaced the “3”, “6” and “9” with “15”, “30” and “45” - it’d still be a niche watch with limited appeal, but I think it’d look cool and the design would be coherent. As it is, it’s a bit odd. Neither fish nor fowl as far as the dial goes.

I think the older AK at 34 mm might be too small for some. The new one has crazy busy dial which might put off collectors that like traditional clean dials from Rolex.

It does look better in person on wrist then in print. I really like the green second hand.

I would like it in a 6 watch rotation kinda way but not as my only Rolex reference.

For me at least the dial just silly looking

I like the green text and yellow logo but the hours markers seems like it is slapped together with leftover Explorer parts and bringing in some racing sponsored project that Rolex did.

Not cohesive at all

If Rolex replaced the 3,6,9 with 15,30,45 then I'd actually consider it

Air-King debate

I just picked one up a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Yes, it's the "Un"Rolex, which is appealing for understated-ness reasons, and it's also the most perfectly balanced, most comfortable one I own (TT Bluesy and Exp II Polar). It feels as though I'm not even wearing a watch, which is how it should be, right?

As for the aesthetics, I believe people would have a different view once seeing it and trying it on in person. The online pics make the green and yellow TOO loud, which it's not. You have to be right on top of the watch to even notice it. In fact, the green second hand and green Rolex text almost disappear. It's honestly not as obnoxious as the pics tend to make it out to be.

As for the 3, 6, & 9, I understand people's hesitation here, too; although they also disappear. Those who say Rolex should've simply stuck with the white numerals in place of the 3, 6, & 9 are correct in regard to symmetry. However, because those numerals are white gold, they actually disappear on the dial, which makes it look less crowded. I'm telling ya...go see one and try it on and you'll love it. And look, Daytona used to be a dud once upon a time...just sayin'...

This is my sentiment exactly. And if ever bought, I don’t think it would get enough wrist time.

I've always liked the Air King, but I'd love it with a date window. The colors are unique for Rolex and it's a clean design.

Eye of the beholder, I guess. I like it, especially when I found out that it was modeled after a cockpit stopwatch. I dislike some very popular models that are well-loved here, so go figure.

I really liked the proportions and how it wore on the wrist but just can't get on board with the 3-6-9 + 5-10-20... mix on the dial

It has no real purpose and most ppl like 'tool' Rolexes here. Plus the dial is not that great looking imao.

Once the Thrust SSC cleans up the land speed record, I reckon this will be retired.

You read it here first.

I think it gets retired after they run out of shiny 369 Explorer 1 dials to repurpose!
