Dust inside Sapphire

Okay so I just noticed that there is a little tiny piece of dust stuck on the underside of the sapphire. It is in between the 6 o’clock and 5 o’clock markers. It is really small but every time I look at the watch that is where my eyes go.

Do you think that it will work its way off the sapphire and onto the dial and is this okay? I guess better in here than in the movement? Which begs the question is there more dust in the movement?

Should I take it in to my local AD under warrantee? Keep in mind it is a V serial I bought it from my local jeweler who got it from an AD he knows. My warrantee card has all my wife’s info and the AD’s info so it should be okay.

Or do I bring it in to my jeweler and have him ship it off to where he got it?

Or do I just try to forget about it and see what happens?

I guess this is why you do not take pictures of your Movement…

If it falls onto the dial then it will probably eventually fall into the date window. This is not good since it'll then make its way into the movement. In fact, the opposite situation is probably how the dust spec got onto the dial side in the first place. There probably is other dust in the movement. I would use your warranty and have the AD clean the movement for you. You could use your local jeweler, but he'll probably charge you for the work, so that's why I said use the warranty.

Or should I relax as it is a Rolex? If a tiny spec of dust can stop this movement I think we all have a big problems?

I had the same problem with my gmt master iic. I brought it into NY RSC and will be getting it back in a couple of days.

i wonder if it's a recurring problem with this model.

I also have a tiny dust particle inside the sapphire on my watch. It is an D serial and have never been opned. I think it is from the lume. I think it is not harmfull. All watches have some particle inside. If it is too big the movement stops, if not it keeps on going.

If your AD has a watchmaker on staff, it's an easy fix, if not, you'll be w/out your watch for a few weeks!

Thanks guys for you time.

I just pictured Rolex building their watches in a clean room or something along those lines. You know guys in light blue suits gloves and an environment with low level pollutants.

But I guess not.

I have noticed a small hair on the underside of the glass on my watch.
Its near middle of glass.
Had watch 3 years so might just send it in for a full service.

It might not be dust. I have a m series sub date i bought in 08 that looked like dust was on the underside of the crystal,so i took it back to the ad ,the watchmaker laughed and said rolex does not have dust in their factory and he put my watch under a microscope .Sure enough it was a enclusion in the crystal itself .He said sapphire is like diamonds they sometimes have imperfections.Anyway i left the factory crystal on kinda looks cool under a high powered microscope.....

I would take it to Rolex and have it taken care of under warranty. That is unacceptable, and even the crystal I would have replaced if it had a imperfection in it. Sapphire is not like a diamond, it should not have anything wrong with it.

I would have laughed hysterically at an AD telling me that Rolex does not have dust in their manufacturing facility! I dont think I have had a Rolex yet that did not have dust under the crystal.

My local watchmaker has a clean room that all work is done in. They DO wear gloves, masks, hats, lab coats and covers over shoes. The room is sealed so well that there are two doors that you must go through and when they are opened it makes that cool swooshing sound.
He has told me even under these conditions occasionally something will get under a crystal.

my M series GMTIIc has a dot of a dust near the 5 and 6 hour markers. it can only be seen at certain angles or if u really go look at it.

i read somewhere that there is no such thing as perfection and even PP and AP suffers from QC issues now and then. Hence, I decided to leave it as-is since it is not too obvious.

I hate to take the risk of it coming back with more defects :(. I kinda hate it when someone opens my working watch but thats just me :D

Does this mean you took the back off to take pictures?]
Technically you have invalidated your warranty, and dependant on where you send your watch for service, ie, RSC, they can tell via a torque gauge if the back has been opened.

Hey I had this happen to my datejust right after I brought it "second hand" from the 1st owner....took it to the RSC and they removed it and gave it back to me "had a seat and looked at some very nice mags and catalogs :-) when they gave it back said it most likely fell through when I opened the crown "the dust may have fell in that way" but it was free of charge "they were really nice and told me if I let it sit around for a long time without use before openeing the crown wipe or blow it off around the crown to make sure theres no foriegn objects round ...... ha ha ha ha

That would really bug me in a nice watch. I would send it to RSC to correct it.

I bought my rollie, brand new, a few weeks ago. I was all happy till today, when in the sun I've spotted this "dust particle"... Now I'm not sure should I go crazy about it and take it to my AD or just ignore it? What surprise me is that according to the web it happens quite often...

I had same thing happen once a while ago- took it to my watchmaker. He opened her up and took out movement and dial- hit it with air and it was gone in a flash! The best part was- he charged me nothing!! quick and easy fix!

I'll probably end up doing the same thing, but there's a part of me that says I should "take it like a man" maybe I'll give this damn particle a name or something?

Small particle on my 2 month old BLNR

Had the same problem with my GMT MASTER II BLNR which I bough from Harrods in Apr 2016 , I realised there was a small particle inside the dial next to the X "Rolex" took it in on the 1st of June to the Rolex Sevice Centre in London (ST James's Square ) they promsied to have it done before the 7th , a week as I need to travel. I'm eager to find out the reason how the particle has made its way inside the dial. I've vlogged my experience on my YouTube channel if you guys are interested: https://youtu.be/qulPRZehf8o
