Datejust references

Sorry if this has been debated before...

I have tried to understand the different references for older Datejusts, mainly the 16xx series. What I haven't been able to clarify is the connection between reference and bezel and bracelet. For example I have seen a 1600 which had a smooth bezel and Oyster bracelet but also with a Jubilee bracelet. But I have read somewhere that the 1600 on Oyster should be a 1610 or maybe 1611, and that the 1600 only came with Jubilee??

Is there anyone with the patience and skill to explain this to me? ;-)

Patience and skill? Uhhh...no. But I'll try. From my references:

1601 series - fluted bezel (also 1623 series)
1603 " - engine turned bezel (also 1622 series)
1605 " - pyramid diamond bezel
1607 " - bark bezel (also 1611 series)
1620 " - polished bezel
1625 " - turn-o-graph bezel' thunderbird

Typically the fluted bezel 1600s came jubilee bracelets, the polished bezels - with oyster. Problems in trying to compare a model number to a particular watch are: there are many genuine, reworked, and aftermarket bezels, bracelets, (and dials) floating around out here; most are interchangeable among the1600 series DJ case/movement; and these watches are old and could have had many owners. Parts wear out and are replaced with whats easily available and each owner probably has a different idea on how their watch should look (this week/this year). How many on this forum haven't 'had their way' with an old Datejust (or at least thought about it)??

TRFers please don't hesitate to change or add to the above - its from a single reference (Rolex Ref Guide by T. Charles Jarman).

Hope this helps. And welcome to the forum.

The 16xx DJs have so many variations and bracelet options it's hard not to consider them as one of the best Rolex series ever made.

Side by side pictures of all styles of bezels would be helpful as some of those seems to be quite rare.

That is a gen 16030 with white dial (roman numerals) it has a 3035 movement.
I would be weary of how stretched out that jubilee bracelet is however. They can be VERY expensive to replace (well over 1k). You'd probably be better off finding a 16030 with recent service and better bracelet.
Cheers!
(side note) I am buying a 16030 today myself :) very excited

fwiw, in the 60s one could buy a 1603 without a bracelet, buy the bracelet separately and end up with a 1603 with Jubilee or Oyster as desired.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but in the interest of adding good information...

16xx additions include:

1611 Bark bezel
1622 Engine-turned bezel (SS only)
1623 Fluted bezel
1624 Bark bezel (18k only)
1630 Engine-turned bezel (18k only)

Those are the only other 16xx series Datejust's I am aware of at this time.

Hey guys !

I do not want to open an other thread if the information is already available, I am looking for DteJust references and timeline history in order to get more information like:
What is the period of production of Datejusts with engine turned bezel and which references are with this configuration (1603 and 1622x only ?).
Thanks for your help.
