Is the 5990 a daily?

Three months ago today, I took collection of a 5990 following a long search and largely thanks to the help of a fellow forum member, thanks again Sam

At the time of receipt, my collection was as follows:

AP Royal Oak 15450 Blue Dial
AP Royal Oak 15450 Silver Dial
AP Royal Oak Offshore Diver
Rolex Daytona 116519 LN
Rolex Daytona 116500
Rolex Sea Dweller 116600
Rolex GMT 126710 BLRO
Rolex GMT 116710 BLNR
JLC Reverso GMT
Omega Speedmaster Reduced
TAG Microtimer

Whilst this is a modest collection compared to many on here, it offered plenty of variety and some pieces that I really love, in particular the Daytona 116519.

Since adding the 5990, the BLNR and the 116500 have reluctantly been allowed to move on to pastures new; I was particularly sad to see the 116500 go but it wasn’t getting any wrist time following the acquisition of the 519. And the good news is that it went to one of my best friends so it’s gone to a good home.

I am still left with a decent collection that in reality is too big, but gives me lots of scope for variety and change.

My expectation, was that the 5990 would be worn largely for work and even then, maybe only a couple of days a week.

The reality however, is very different. Since I acquired the Patek three months ago, there has been a maximum of 10 days where I’ve not worn it! And most of those were in the first month.

Two months ago I went away for a long weekend and put all my watches (apart from the Speedmaster and the 5990) in my safe (normally kept day to day in a watch case and a three-watch winder). Since returning from that weekend, those watches have not left the safe, and the 5990 has only left my wrist for golf and gardening, when it has been replaced by the Speedmaster.

I’m not going to do anything rash with the collection as it’s still early days with the Patek, but everything other than the 116519 and the 116600 is under threat!

But the bottom line is this - the 5990 is an awesome everyday watch!

It does of course now have some battle scars, but they just give it character

first of all it s nice if someone so happy with a watch and indeed a Nautilus is a great daily companion , I should add that you have a stunning collection but also can understand if you want to reduce the number of pieces you own.
wear it in good health

I agree that the 5990 is a great daily watch. It's versatile and has very useful complications in a case that has the same thickness as any Rolex professional sports. I like its "industrial" look (probably due to the grayish dial) very much as it gives a workhorse vibe.

Those shots were lovely, and the last pic was fantastic!

Can easily be a daily. Any travel time watch alongside having a chorno and date makes its easily wearable and for ary occasion. One you wear one of these, a BLRO, BLNR and any other watch becomes clear who the true king is. Good choice

I worn my Nautilus 5980 1AR as a daily watch and it’s ok!
About your collection I don’t know what to say but you have fine pieces who can be wear anytime.
So if you don’t have problem to keep the money in this pieces you can keep it!

Patek's quality does make it harder to wear a less refined Rolex, but then Rolexes are great devil may care watches, so good to have both, but don't need multiple Rolexes imho, I think you need an Aqua, 64 or 67.

Welcome to Patek :)

I think many of us were on the same boat, I can imagine you escalating very soon with other Patek’s.

Enjoy in good health.

I think you’re probably right and I do like the 5164!

As someone keen on symmetry, selling a couple (I.e the BLRO and the JLC) and adding a 5164 is tempting. It would leave me with two Rolex, two AP (the silver dial has gone to the wife already), and two Patek - one rubber and one metal bracelet in each!

Thickness is great, and I have small wrists. But I think it’s perfect for a sports watch.

Well put! I own one Rolex (114060) and everything else is Patek. Devil-may-care perfectly describes my approach toward wearing my Submariner.

Love my 5990. It’s a perfect all rounder - sporty, waterproof, a couple of nice complications, looks great and goes with pretty much everything

Not had mine long but coming round to your way of thinking.

what are you doing in places that don't have a roof? Stepping outside and it automatically must mean right onto a giant mountain you have to free climb.

I probably beat my watches up more inside than outside, just because of the closer proximity to other objects.

So true. I feel like my watches are far more likely to get damaged getting in and out of a car than when I am hiking or spending time in the ocean.

Of course you have the freedom to wear anything anywhere, especially if you do not care about excessive cosmetic damages to a PP, but I do.

I don't think 5990 is a great "daily" option for very physically active guys, like athletics, coaches, contractors...etc

Well that isn’t what you said originally, so your changing the argument. I go outdoors regularly and have suffered no damage to my Patek as a result. I wouldn’t wear it to the gym (but people do), but that doesn’t mean a Patek isn’t a daily. In the same way I wouldn’t wear a pair of jeans to go swimming, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be worn as daily attire
