Why hasn't it been brought down?

Gary Powers must be enjoying this...wherever he maybe.

LiDAR scans are so much nicer looking at 80 instead of LEO. Maybe making a coffeetable book for Xi? Or a TikTok…

Safer to capture off-shore inside the US EEZ. Good practice for drone jockeys and naval aviators with unfused AIM-120’s to poke holes in the helium bag. Of course, if it’s hydrogen, could be spectacular hindenburgesque aerial display.

Stay tuned…in a few hours’ time it’ll be out of US airspace.

In context of the amount of junk that NASA and the US military routinely drop out of the sky, I am somewhat incredulous that they are concerned about debris, or that they don’t have the skill set to initiate a controlled descent of a balloon. The techniques to do so are over a century old.

I doubt it is of US origin. Surely, China would not publicly claim it if it were not theirs. There is something else going on. We are simply not being told what it is.

No, that’s Russian dis— and if we’re really letting loose here, mis—information. As is the balloon itself, which an illusion created by mass psychosis. A mass psychosis caused by white supremacy.

Hope that cleared everything up.

It actually is a meteorological balloon. The Chinese need detailed information for nuclear fallout on the North American continent and how it would be affected by weather patterns.

Unfortunately there might be more truth to this than any of us care to admit…

The reason I don’t believe this is because weather and jet stream patterns for North America are readily available for everyone, including the Chinese. A single ballon won’t give them any additional information.

They’re likely taking pictures.

One thing they did prove was that a balloon carrying a nuclear weapon can be flown over the US and we wouldn’t know it until it was too late.

Detailed information about the atmospheric conditions in restricted air space, over military property, and over missile silos?

Is there public weather data from equipment located inside Area 51? Maybe there’s information about the weather near Area 51, and we can extrapolate that the weather inside the restricted zone is essentially the same.

They already have that information. The US government tracks industrial pollution from China as it travels throughout the northern hemisphere. There are detailed studies available to anyone online.

The NWS publishes accurate weather data for all flight levels in near real time.

And, China stole quite a bit of US nuclear weapons information in the 1990’s. They have a very detailed planning picture without needing an embarrassing balloon transgression.

Yes, the jet streams will be the largest influence on nuclear fallout. Not random day to day weather in a specific area.

They are mining all the information they need about Americans from TikTok. Unforunately it will be too late before people realize it.

So the balloon was shot down, but only because the public spotted it. They would have happily covered it up and let it return home to China.

It occurs to me that the same people who assessed that the balloon was no threat assessed that it would take the Taliban months to take over Afghanistan.

Confidence in their assessments is low.

You know that’s the interesting thing about people. I know of no one who is perfect. Yet someone like you and me who post on a forum typically are wrong when it comes to things we have no knowledge about.

One difference is that I have zero incentive to give a false opinion about any topic discussed here. Experts entrenched in a field invariably have plenty of reasons to not tell the truth. The people with the most knowledge can also have the least credibility

You guys would have had a polite conversation with the balloon and then escorted it to the penalty box for a two minute time out.

“No one” is perfect, which is why we pay groups of experts to minimize the probability of a critical error. The same group of experts has been wrong on some critical things the past couple of years. People are what their trend is.

We don’t have to know why the balloon was managed the way it was to not have faith in this group of experts.

You sure like to take pot shots at the Americans, between your cruise thread, stating "I wonder how the Americans are going to F#ck this up" regarding deboating in San Diego, and now this garbage. Relax, aren't you on a cruise, have a shirley temple, and chill out.
