Relieved, but confused and a bit concerned....

Before the Covid outbreak, my girlfriend and I were planning on taking a trip this fall. I realized that my passport was expired and decided to renew. I sent the passport renewal and all of the pertinent info in to the DOJ in late January. I received a confirmation that my papers had been received and were "In Process" as of Feb. 5th.

Long story short, on 6/15 I finally received notification that it had been approved and was being shipped. A tracking number was provided and the estimated delivery was to be 6/25. Anxious for it to arrive, I checked the tracking... everything was fine and on the 25th, as expected... it showed delivered at 4:47 p.m. - Placed in Mailbox. I went to the mailbox.. no passport. Immediately I got concerned.

I waited until the 26th, called my local post office and was told "If it was scanned as delivered it should be there or will be there today". The 26th came and went... no passport.

On the 27th I caught the mail carrier and asked her about it. She said " If it was scanned, it was delivered." We went round and round a bit... Finally she said " If I had it, it would be in either the deliverable mail tub, or this dead letter tub." At which time she reached into the "Dead Letter" container and asked what my address was... I told her and she miraculously produced the piece of Priority Tracked mail that had my passport.

When I asked her how it could be scanned as delivered - "Placed In Mailbox" yet it was in her dead letter tub? She looked at me and said "I am done talking to you!" and drove away.

What concerns me is how many times has this happened? How many things of mine and others have ended up in the dead letter tub when it was perfectly deliverable?

I don’t know, but I wold make an appointment to speak with her supervisor(s) and press it home as much as possible. Everything about that transaction was unacceptable, from the non delivered letter to her attitude. Stand up for your service

That sounds like a 'temp' worker in place of your regular carrier...my regular USPS carrier is very diligent it is the temp replacements for vacations and such that leave a lot to be desired.

Did you get the box of cigars Steve 'Lol-x' sends to every new TRF member?

Go to USPS.COM and create an account and then turn on informed delivery. You can see what mail you have coming each day.

Great advice.

The last time I renewed my passport I had a replacement in less than 3 weeks.
I canít imagine, other than the COVID crisis, why it took over 5 months for your new passport to arrive.

The informed delivery works very well except sometimes the piece is delivered the day after it shows as in that day's mail. Still a worthwhile resource. Shows packages as well.

Wouldn't worry about it. The way USPS is being treated in some quarters they may not be around much longer anyway.

Not excusing anyone's behavior but what would be the point of pursuing it further besides trying to get the carrier in trouble? Yeah, she screwed up, most of us do at some point, but in the end, you walked away with your passport.

That’s pretty funny.

I’m glad you got your passport.

Love the ‘I’m done talking to you.’ I think that’s script they’re trained on.

This is worldwide problem.

You have your passport so save yourself time and grief.

Leave it at that.

You will waste a lifetime trying to sort out any postal system.

We now have two items on our Ozzy tracking system:

’picked up from sender ‘ and ‘delivered’.

Between those two I expect it is ‘in transit’.

We had a reasonably valuable item delivered last week. I paid extra for 'signed for' delivery. The package was left on the doorstep, I hadn't signed a thing.
Checked website, yep, 'package - signed for'.
I think the courier drivers are under huge pressure to make their quotas, so
don't hang about, just put a squiggle on the handset and off to the next job.

Exactly this. There is a postmaster you need to be speaking with ASAP.

I’ve had a similar experience with USPS recently.

I had a watch that was shipped with them from Southern California that was certified mail that was only supposed to take a week. It winded up taking over a month. Obviously a bit nerve wracking having an expensive watch with no updates or movement for a month. I followed up with them constantly and opened various inquiries with them. In the end it made it here eventually, but through all the inquiries you could really understand, and get the feeling that they really didn’t care.

Talked to a few different supervisors, and they basically just gave me a text book response each time. The inquiries I had opened were the same thing just a basic its in transit type answer and gave me a bad call back number when it made it to voice mail.

Once it was finally delivered it required a signature being certified mail, but they just dropped it in the box, and tracking on their website claimed I had signed for it.

You will waste a ton of time trying to ever get that fixed. I’ve spoken to people that formally worked there before, and from my understanding under the union that they work under there are no real repercussions for anything. It’s kind of just a free for all and no one really cares.
