Top 10 Seiko Facts!

1. Seiko was started in 1881 by one young man aged 22, Kintaro Hatorri trading as “K. Hattori” a jewelry and watch manufacturing shop in Tokyo with the first "Seiko" branded watch appearing in 1924.

2. Seiko in Japanese means "success" or "exquisite".

3. Seiko was the first Japanese company to make a dedicated diver watch water resistant to 150 meters and has enjoyed a long and ongoing association with the worldwide Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

4. Seiko is the official timekeeper for Olympic events.

5. Seiko watches have featured as being worn by James Bond (in movies).

6. Seiko is Japan's national railway watch, and when a train is 20 seconds early they have been know to make a public apology such is their adherence to timing precision.

7. Seiko made the worlds first quartz watch know as the Seiko Astron released on 25 December 1969.

8. Seiko has and does produce many sub-brands over the years including King Seiko, Lord Marvel Seiko, Pulsar, Orient and of course Grand Seiko, but for many decades Seiko only exported their budget priced "Seiko" range.

9. Seiko at the forefront of innovation was the first company to produce and release a titanium case watch (1975), a television watch (1982).

10. In 1960 Seiko launched its first "Grand Seiko" made from a small team of experienced and highly skilled watchmakers high in the hills at a discrete facility in the Nagano prefecture of central Japan. Which would later become famous for technical sophistication and innovation in its "Spring Drive" and "Hi-Beat" movement models.

Nice list. I love the history and variety of Seiko. There's no "Wow, is that a Rolex?" type of brand stigma -- just great watches at fair prices

I've barely taken my sbdc059 off all week. Have it on a tropical rubber strap now. has yours been getting wrist time?

The current CEO of Seiko is Shinji Hattori. Mr. Hattori is the great-grandson of Kintaro Hattori, the founder of Seiko.

There's a few more here: https://www.fratellowatches.com/10-t...o-infographic/

Oddly enough Omega and not Seiko will be official timer of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. It was Seiko in Tokyo in 1964.

Always innovative and delivering quality well above their price point.

Another “fact” for the list is they have always been using an “in house movement “ which of course is all the rage these days...

And so many calibres! I can't even keep up with the ones they developed in the 1960s alone.
