Magic & Mystique....

Hello all. I’ve discovered this forum within the last few weeks, since I’ve been entrusted with the care of a 1945 Rolex Bubbleback. My father in law purchased this watch in Switzerland from Bucherer during the war.

I have never been much of a time piece enthusiast. In fact, I’ve always viewed watches as utilitarian items. Bought cheap ones, changed batteries while they were still working and then added them to the, graveyard of old watch junk drawer, when they died. I’ve spent the last 10 years with a naked wrist.

I’ve caught a glimpse every now and then of this watch. My father in law brought it out for special occasions. I’ve maybe seen it 2-3 times in the last 20 years and never looked very closely at it. Then a few weeks ago, he started looking into getting the watch serviced, as he said it was no longer keeping time. So I’ve been researching for him on the web and here I am. The watch is in my possession (for the time being) and I believe that the magic and the mystique is starting to weave its spell in my brain; dare I say, in my soul.

That is enough for now. I’ll go into more detail soon and post some pics.

If you go to a Rolex worthy (skilled in the servicing of Rolex) watchmaker...you should be able to get it serviced and working like new for a couple of hundred dollars...

Thanks for that advice. My FIL emailed HQ In Switzerland, but never received a reply. Do you think we should contact Bucherer about vintage parts or just find that Rolex worthy Watchmaker here in the States. This piece is in pristine condition and I'd hate to see it replaced with modern parts.

You might have better luck asking for a service recommendation over on the vintage section.
