I say get it new. You won't miss the $1000 after you start wearing it knowing you were the only person to wear the watch. Plus your name will be on the warranty card which is another thing that feels good.

I'm a bit biased, since I just bought a mint "gently used" 14060 Sub from George Ab which is wonderful.

Save the sheckls and buy used from one of the reputable dealers in TRF classifed.

As far as foreign DNA, take it into an AD; most clean the watch for free.

Keep in mind, add in the sales tax the savings is alot more than 1K (depending on the state) when buying mint used.

I think people who buys 'higher-end' watches tends to baby em... unlike buying a used car
I'm a good example... the rear tires of my last car lasted only 3 - 3.5K miles. LOL

If you buy the seller, my opinion is buy the "mint" one....I have bought several watches here on TRF and have no regrets.

(plus I seem to have turned into a flipper, so the cost of mint helps way more in this case)

You'll feel the bond on the new and every hairline there after becomes part of you.

Busted my Rolex "cherry" on a new GMTIIc and paid full price at an AD. What a waste! I should have bought a used one on TRF and could have save about 2K!!! My next watch WILL be used and I will only buy from trusted sellers here. So, my vote is USED!

It Boils down to the price difference for me. If it's 1k or >, I'll go for mint. Good luck.

My first rolex I purchased from an AD at full price plus tax...I do regret it, since I see the same watch here on TRF for way less. Saying that though, the grass is greener on the other side. I know that if I purchased my first watch used, I'd be contemplating on buying my next watch 'new'. Honestly though, like everyone here has stated, if it's a watch that's going to be passed down, def. buy new. The warranty card has your name and the date of purchase, which is always cool.

New is of course, best. But if the price difference of a mint one is substantial, then go for 2nd hand.

If you are buying a newer GMT than it depends on your market. When I bought mine, I got it cheaper new from an AD than a 4yr old one was on TRF. Location is everything.

You state that you are buying GMT II not the IIc. Correct?

If that's the case I would give serious look the TRF deals here especially if they are on the same model and come cheaper.

I bought my first two at an AD - first one GMT IIc with good discount and Milgauss at amazing discount as the AD was losing status. My third one was Exp I 36mm which is no longer sold by Rolex and I got it here. Very happy with the purchase though I must admit that I was little concerned while transferring the money. My concern only lasted few days until box with very nice Exp I landed at my door.

Everything went very smoothly and I would recommend you to deal with people you trust. As they say here 'always buy the seller first'. Check out the Who is who section and ask the seller for references until you get comfortable to deal this way.

Good luck.

80% of the Rolexs, brietlings, omegas and others I have bought pre-loved. Never had a problem except saving money.

But do what is best for you....

+1

I bought a used 99 model blue sub 16613. It was REALLY scratched up, had chips in the crystal, bezel had a big scratch on it as well - basically, the watch looked like it was dragged on the floor lol! But one trip to the RSC +$400 for a complete overhaul, bezel/crystal replacement, polishing, and I got it back good as new!

As long as the actual movement is still pretty good, I'm going for it. RSC does extremely good work for a very reasonable price. Better priced than Omega in my country.

I considered a pre-owned watch when buying my DateJust, but I was stuck on the newer features (serial numbers, inner bezel etching, solid bracelet links, etc.). After an exhaustive search, I figured the extra change was worth spending to get hold of a BRAND NEW ROLEX! I'm happy I did.

This is a truth. All the things said about buying a mint pre-loved (love that term) Rolex ring true but there is some intangible pleasure from making the deal on the counter and being the first to slide that creation onto your wrist.

Well, OK, forget about the other people who tried it on and didn't buy it. Fools! They left it for you!

Of course, if you crave a particular vintage watch, what choice do you have?

Not to be gauche, but it's also a fair point that some 'grail' watches are just beyond our price point to buy new from an AD. Sad, but true.

if they both have all the original paperwork, box, etc, i would just go with the used one, never hurt anyone to save some money wherever they can =D
