Was an Engineman on the USS Constellation CV-64 (Aircraft Carrier) from 92-96. One of the Engineers of the Watch (EOW) always wore a Sub, along with many pilots.

Royal Navy clearance diver 1950's

Attached is a photo of my brothers "Jimmy"(Left, who died recently and Michael) they both did did national service in the 50's and Jimmy joined the Navy full time to become a clearance diver, this all took place 20 odd years before I was born, things didn't work out to well for him as he end up with a perforated ear drum whilst ascending (problems caused by the changes in ambient pressure) he was later discharged, the photo is of my brothers , buttons and blazer badge were his, the Submariner Is mine, not sure if he ever owned one.

Yes food on a Submarine is excellent, You never go hungry! Now berthing is another deal as it is limited and not comfortable at all.

A nice tribute to your brothers.

I didn't wear a Rolex back then; but I wear one now just about everyday. It was a shame when Rolex stopped letting the military exchanges sell Rolex watches in the year 2000.
I sure wish I had it in my mind for a nice watch back in my day from the Exchange.. My sister talked me in to buying some Waterford Kildare crystal stemware and Noritake china.. The china has never been out of the box. I probably would have thought a Rolex was too expensive at the time. Had no clue..

We had a Filipino mess chef who was a Chief (E7) and he would make some special things for us on occasion. One that was very good was Lumpia. Yum.. My other favorite was fried shrimp on Fridays. I was amazed we had still had real eggs after several weeks at sea.

New guys sometimes had to share a rack(berth) with another guy. Not the best situation if one of them has BO! I was lucky as a newbie I never had to share a rack, mainly because my position (ELT) would be required at different times of the day, so I slept when I could. Some guys had beds under the torpedoes. Not sure if that was by design or they didn't want to hot rack.

Another lucky thing for me sometimes, after completing Scuba School at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor was when the Sub surfaced at sea for some problem, they would send a diver topside first. He was designated a swimmer with the purpose of being prepared to rescue anyone who might fall overboard. After a long time underway it sure was a pleasure to get outside and breath some fresh air and see the sky!

And then there was the stop in Subic City........

Surface Warfare - USS Belknap, NAVBASE Newport, and a few others.

Back then I wore a Seamaster Pro 300 and a Casio World Time Thermo, which the latter I miss a lot.

Thanks to all here who served, it's very appreciated. On a somewhat related note, my son plays high school lacrosse, and we just signed him up for a summer lacrosse camp at the Naval Academy. He's very excited. We will be dropping him off there - looking forward to checking out Annapolis and the USNA.

USNA?

Parents who love their children don’t let them make such horrible life choices. Take up to USMA so he can experience a real military academy!

Retired Navy MSC officer here - still living a stone's throw from the largest naval base in the world.... FYI, the Exchange here has started carrying pre-owned Rolexes again, but they use a private contracted vendor who is overpriced... Shame that the Exchange allows the vendor to gouge active duty sailors and retirees...

FWIW, I was in school at a time it wasn't so popular to serve and people were chosen by a draft. I've been on an active battleship as a guest of an Admiral but never was in the service nor on an active submarine. The closest I got to a Sub was sailing by Sandy Hook in NJ as one was leaving port. I was on a Hobie Cat and tried to keep up; pretty funny. They move right along!!!

A few photos for those interested in Submarine life, showing M Div (Nuc Mechanical guys), Crews Mess (6hrs on watch, 6 in the rack, 6 for training, movie, cards.), all crew photo, group photo in the Philippines at a bar called the Island Girl, and just a cool Submarine photo.

On the other hand, my father was a Lt. Cmdr. during WWII on a PT Boat. Not quite the same as a Sub. Retired due to medical reasons.

Third generation Navy-10 years active, starting my 19th year (USNR) next month. Flew Prowlers, Super Hornets, Growlers, and transport. Spent 3 days on the Asheville as a midshipman.

Owned a Coke 16710 during active duty (as well as group bought/engraved Omega X-33 and Breitling Aerospace). Still own previous watches and have added 116500 and 126600.

I have a lot of respect for the Navy, and especially those who work in the Silent Service. I’m an Air Force guy, but have worked with many Navy. Great heritage, and a great team!

Former Navy bubble head (1974-1982). 4 patrols each on SSBN-609 and SSBN-598. In between, did a brief stint on SSN-699.

Remember seeing a few Rolex watches for sale at the Navy Exchange in Guam. Steel Submariner was around $700 as I recall. At the time, I couldn't wrap my head around why someone would pay that much for a watch -- especially since I had recently laid out $35 for a new Seiko diver's watch!
