5-digit recommendations wanted
Greetings. I am a satisfied owner of a Submariner 114060. Learning about the history of the brand and lurking on this forum has me interested in obtaining a 5-digit reference as my next piece.
I am considering (in no specific order) a 16710 GMT II (Coke bezel), 16570 Explorer 2 (polar) and 14270 Explorer. Any particular recommendations among these three models? I am definitely planning on wearing it and price and potential value appreciation are not huge concerns, but will be taken into consideration. Are there other models I should consider? Thanks in advance for any advice. |

Look into a 16700 or 16760, since you have the 16710 on the radar screen.

Spend any amount of time around these parts, you'll see plenty of members beating the drum for the 16710. (Guilty as charged!)
Just an excellent reference. Until the mothership releases a GMT with interchangeable bezel inserts and bracelets, the 16710's value probably won't be going the opposite direction anytime soon. i.e. get one at a reasonable price while you can Last edited by meyers; 11 May 2018 at 05:55 AM.. The Polar Exp II is a great bargain. I'd definitely take a look at that.

An Explorer II or the gorgeous 16710.

Another vote for the 16700. It’s thinner and a better buy.

16570 - I too have a SubC which I love, but the 16570 makes for a great daily. Pretty good prices can be found, but they have been increasing lately.
I wear mine on a NATO most of the time.

Controversial, and I say this as a huge fan of the 5 digits, but they are way overpriced for what they now. 14060s and 16610s in the 6-7K range, GMTs over 10K. Compare side by side with the 6 digits and its hard to justify paying 80-100% of the price of a new sub/GMT for a 5-10 year old watch that has likely seen a polish, bracelet stretch, and dings.

Another vote for a 15670 Polar - I love mine, and I also feel it offers the most contrast to your current sub with the dial color, SS bezel, and size.
Also, the five digit models wear so stinking well, but I think the Explorer II is the most "magical" of all of them, as the bezel really slides under cuffs and generally feels a little more low profile all round. Some like the early tritium models for patina and "near vintage" feel, but I prefer solid end links, holes case. The holes case just feels right for a watch that was designed back in the 80s, and allows for super dead easy strap changes. But the solid end link bracelet is very positive and feels robust and modern once the clasp is shut. Also that means you get the superluminova, that will stay minty fresh and looks so good as it changes colors in various light against the white dial... All great choices though - happy hunting! |

My vote is for the 16710 due to it’s versatility.

Thanks so much to all who have responded and especially those who included pics (makes me want to purchase tomorrow!) Lots of love out there for a 5-digit GMT and a fair amount of support for the Explorer II as well. Not sure my decision has gotten any easier but it is great to hear others' views.

I'd probably go with the GMT. It could be my one and only. It's not a five digit reference, but you might consider an Explorer 114270.

I'd say GMT or Explorer II like most have suggested. 5 digit subs are great, but you already have a sub.

16570, last year if possible due to better braclet.

The 16570 polar is still undervalued. If you like it that’s the one I would snatch up. The 16710 is a beautiful watch of course, and the last aluminum bezel GMT that will ever be produced.
