Icon20 Rolex 1803 Day Date Buckley Dial from Beckertime

Hello TRF Community,

I have been on the hunt for an 1803 (Day Date) Buckley Dial for a long time now. I have looked through TRF, looked through many (if not all) the vintage watch dealers in NYC (and some in LA, online).

I found what I wanted on Chrono24, but was generally sketched out because people thought the watch was a counterfeit and the seller had very questionable constraints:

Link to that discussion:
Link to watch from Chrono24:

I came across a similar watch on Beckertime. I have read the threads on "Who's Who" and see that the opinion on Beckertime is pretty divided (so there is no need to rehash that argument here); just wanted to get folks' thoughts on the specific watch here (and the authenticity / degree of after-market touch up) to the watch.

Link to watch:

I see the dial has been refinished and the strap is not original (I want the black leather strap, and most of the straps I have come across are not original). Anything else? Any other thoughts on the watch (or I guess generally on the potential transaction) welcome as well, given you all probably know much more about this than I do.

Cheers,
US

PS: Long post, but thought the context may be helpful (even though Chrono24 has nothing to do with Beckertime)...

Bezel looks worn down. Day-Date needs a sharp bezel IMO, you would end up replacing that one eventually because even the Wheel Wizards over at LAWW can't restore one of those, it would bother you every time you looked at the watch. That plus a refinished dial and no strap make this watch a pass for me at that price. I'd keep looking - a Day-Date is a special piece for many, it would be good to get the exact one you want. I'm very glad I chose the particular one I have, it's naked-eye flawless...if I were you I'd hold out for the perfect one. They did make rather a lot of them and they come up for sale fairly often, after all. Good luck eh

Thanks for the thoughts.

As it turns out, it has also been polished and got an aftermarket crystal. That being said, this is actually the exact one I want (literally my parameters are: 1803 18K YG Day-Date, white buckley face and a black leather strap)....and so Im still leaning towards pulling the trigger.

Your third sentence....thats just what I wanted to hear / confirm. Given that 3 people with presumably more experience have the same opinion, I’ll hold off.

Thanks a ton folks!

If you're OK with the price and redial tell them you want a fresher bezel to make the deal. Becker has probably hundreds of 36mm DDs and TT DJs with 18k bezels. Nice ones are available for 250-300 on ebay. Never let a watch you like go over a replaceable part.

Yet another excuse to post my sweet white Romans!

That’s just beautiful!

I think the combination of an aftermarket dial, new bezel, polished face and aftermarket crystal make the watch more aftermarket than original, and even though that’s exactly the style I wanted..... it just won’t feel like wearing a Rolex, and since that’ll bother me, I’m gonna pull away here.

Thanks again for your thoughts (everyone)

Funny thing...I was looking at the exact watch earlier this month. Couldn't get passed that sloppy bezel....still on the hunt.
