Frequent traveler here: My GMT hand is set to West coast. I live near the East Coast. When I go out west I change the hour hand to West coast time then rotate the bezel to make the GMT hand home time.

I have to set it to local time so i can use my GMT watch as a compass with sun when i am in arctics and jungles :)

In real life I set it to GMT but for those who did not know, Explorer II and GMT-Masters can actually be used as a compass:

Simply point the small hour hand at the sun and, if your 24 hour hand is set correctly to your time zone, it will point towards North. This is how it works in Northern hemisphere.

In the Southern Hemisphere you point the 12:00 marker at the sun (the 1:00 marker if observing Summer Time). The midpoint between 12:00 (or 1:00) and the current hour will be pointing towards North.

And on equator... you have to accept that your days are over.

I do online meetings all the time so I move the GMT hand just as often, set to the local time of the meeting host.

When I travel it’s the hour hand that gets set to the destination time as it should be, to make sure I monitor the local date as well.

Otherwise, I just set the GMT hand to UTC.

GMT hand to home time and hour hand to local time, just for fun I have the bezel set to UTC. I do travel a lot so when I’m away I like to have home time easily available to know when I should call my family.

India has an awkward half hour time zone.

For that one, set the 12 hour hand to GMT, and wear the watch upside-down.

Of course, the original GMT Master could only show 2 formats, 12 and 24hr time, so the innovation was the bezel - not much of a complication.

Yet the majority of manufacturers refer to these watches as GMT's. A true dual time is one that can display two separate time zones such as the JLC Duometre Travel Time or Cellini dual time, these are not the same as a basic 24 hour hand. Dual times and GMT's are not the same.

If GMT were merely the name of the model it wouldn't be printed on Omega dials.

Zulu time here, with bezel rotated to +8 (tracking MNL time).

When mine arrives it will be set to GMT which is also Home for me as I live in the UK, the hour hand would be set to +1 at the moment for British Summer Time.

I like the GMT complication to follow GMT, I find it easier to adjust to different time zones that way.

Do you guys usually twist the bezel for second time zone or change hour hand? I always change the hour hand in a different country, it would drive me crazy if the bezel wasn’t symmetrical lol (BLNR)

The GMT was introduced by Rolex based on requests from Pan Am so that pilots could keep track of GMT and other time zones simultaneously.

Because they were initially intended for pilots who must perforce keep track of GMT, the name was and is perfect, even if most owners today don't need to keep track of GMT, but do need to keep track of multiple time zones.

This does not mean that the twenty-four hour hand is correctly called a GMT hand, although people are free to call it whatever they prefer.

2 ways

When we travel, the gmt hand goes to our home zone, which is Eastern/NYC. The watch is set to local time

At home, I set the watch to local time and let the orange hand wander.

My GMT hand is always set to my home time (pacific time US)....what the hour hand sets to depends on where I am...if I'm @ home then it's the same....if I'm overseas then it's wherever I am. The bezel is always rotated to one of the time zones in Asia that I work with/have family to make that part easier. Love the GMT.

I set my (non-Rolex) GMT to Eastern Standard Time (have family in the US and Caribbean), but when I travel I'll set it to my home timezone...which is GMT :)

No need for a third time zone. No need for GMT unless there. Hasn't it been replaced by UTC anyway?

Mine is always set to home, EST. Mainly because it’s easier to adjust the hour hand on the fly.

GMT and UTC are the exact same time, just the name is different.

Kind of...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwich_Mean_Time

Quote:
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. GMT was formerly used as the international civil time standard, now superseded in that function by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Today GMT is considered equivalent to UTC for UK civil purposes (but this is not formalised) and for navigation is considered equivalent to UT1 (the modern form of mean solar time at 0° longitude); these two meanings can differ by up to 0.9 s. Consequently, the term GMT should not be used for precise purposes.[1]
Precise Porpoises...

I set mine to local time where I live. But I travel frequently for work. I change the normal hour hand to local time where currently am and leave the GMT hand on my home time zone. That way, no matter where I am, be it Australia, Malaysia, Washington, D.C., I will always know what time it is at home.

Local for me. I'm fairly good in math so adding or subtracting a couple hours is fairly simple for me!!!
