Very Unusual Korean or Japanese Warranty Papers - Thoughts Please

Just received a watch from a european seller who checked out well. The watch is exactly as described, however the papers have taken me aback a little

These are for a Y-serial GMT2. I'm sorry, but I'm guessing that they're either Korean or Japanese....and they're certainly a format I haven't seen before, and a little bit 'not what I would expect' for a 2003 watch.

Grateful for any thoughts, particularly anyone who's seen this format before (and a translation if possible!)

Thanks

Hmmm They look different for sure.
Perhaps RSC can assist you. Drop the watch in and they will authenticate it and the paperwork.

Last july I bought my DJ from a retailer (who was an AD till 2 or 3 years ago) and I was really puzzled when he gave me the following warranty document

As you can see there's no "ROLEX" written anywhere !

But I was assured that the document is OK and as I trust the seller (a well known shop in my city, Milan) I have no problem.

I hope this can be useful to reassure the opener.

Cheers

This is written in Japanese. It appears to be a Rolex Japan guarantee, but I am not certain about that. In Japan, the warranty papers have been different in the past. I don't know how they handle them today in the era of warranty cards. I have seen similar looking Japan Rolex guarantee papers in the past. I haven't studied them closely. Many grey dealers charge a premium for watches accompanied by the local Japan Rolex guarantee.

It says Rolex in Japanese katakana in several places on the form. Perhaps one of our Japanese members or someone who is more familiar with Rolex Japan paperwork over the years can tell you more. This looks like the old fashioned guarantee papers issued in Japan. I have seen what appears to be the same form many times here, but have never studied them closely. Many grey dealers charge a premium for a watch accompanied by the local Japan Rolex warranty.

I've owned a few with Japanese papers, and this looks exactly like the others I've seen. The buyers name on the right is covered, and the AD is on the left. My Japanese is rusty, but as best I can tell it came from an AD in Fukuoka prefecture.

Enjoy,
-Grant

May I ask, is that to my papers at the start of the thread, or Bibi's later in the thread?

hchj - +$500 - was that irony, or are you being serious?! :)

Well, since the warranty is expired there won't be an issue trying to get RSC to accept the papers. It would be interesting to see how RSC USA responded to such documentation.

The papers are from 2003, that's how they did it in Japan back then.
However, today I do not know......

It's from an AD still in existence in Fukuoka, Japan. Called Iwataya Fukuoka Tokei Uriba (watch sales dept).
http://www.gressive.jp/shopregular/i...?tenpocd=R0430

FYI, the new cards are plastic with both Japanese and English, I believe.
Guarantees issued from AD's in Japan offer a sense of security to used buyers, at least here they do.

I can chime in on this, too, as I've been living in Tokyo for almost 10 years.

I recently bought a new GMT Master II (116713LN) from an AD in Ginza. They have you fill out a form with your mailing address/email/phone, give you a copy of it and mail you the plastic warranty card (said it would take about a month). Also gave the option of the user manual in English or Japanese (or both).

Perhaps the one major difference I see in Japan, as opposed to what I've found in posts on this forum (from EU/US/ETC) are that there are ZERO discounts at ADs. I had to visit 8 ADs scattered amongst Tokyo before I could even find one that had the GMT M II in the shop, and even with a wad of cash willing to drop down same day, and 10,000 excuses to see if they would budge at all, nothing. The only "discount" one could get is if you are a visitor and could claim tax-free status by having your passport (stamped as such).

Also, not sure if this is the same in the States (where I am originally from), but most of the ADs in Tokyo also gave various reasons/excuses why they could not order/inquire to their parent distributor(s) as to a wait time on a certain model. They gave the rationale that they get no say in what Rolex sends them for stock.

But remembering this is not really a service-based country, even getting them to give an excuse other than "no" is usually twisting fingers anyway.

I'll post an image of the warranty card when it arrives (whether ENG or JAP/ENG).

Cannot see any reason why its just a normal Japanese Rolex warranty paper and very long expired.

I would suspect the hchj meant they would add 500 to the value of the watch in his neck of the woods.

You are quite welcome. And,
here are the views (front and back) of the newer plastic guarantee cards issued in Japan. This is a few years old,so not sure if they have changed.
And "excusez moi", the languages are French (not English) and Japanese.

The first photo that you posted. The watch was sold at Fukuoka Iwataya. Whoever bought it originally DID not get a discount.

Fabrizio, you papers are golden and it does say Rolex on them just in katakana. Which is the Japanese letters when using foreign words.

I have this ROLEX Japan paper dated back to 1970+. I am not Japanese but I think it is original Rolex paper too.

Hope it will worth at least $500 more .... 😄
