Maybe its just me but that aging sure looks manufactured. I would think that the case should look much worse if the rest of the watch is that bad. Unfortunately, these few pics really dont give enough info.

The pictures you posted are terrible. It's the details that matter when purchasing this level of a vintage.

From what I can see, I don't like the dial and the insert is terrible. I really don't know what else is up with the rest of the watch.

Recently I purchased a 6538 for myself. It took me almost 10 years to find a legitimate one.

The only thing I took away from my search, is that I came across way more fakes and Franken watches, than ones that were all legitimately rolex parts.

these small parts like the hands and dial or case, can make the difference in the tens of thousands of dollars.

He is asking approx $39k USD for this piece. If it was an original gilt, which I don't think it is at all, it would be more over 100k USD for a 2 liner. So it's safe to say he knows the dial is fake and is selling the watch as is.

From the values that I have seen from my research on a watch that is scarcely available in the world, in original condition is as follows.

The prices below I am basing off of very good condition "issue free watch" i.e. matching hands, flawless dials, thick cases, no pitting/ corrosion, mint bezels/ inserts, visible serials etc...

prices in USD
(6538 2 liners)
Gilt radium dial $120k+
Service Gilt Dial $65k+
White service dial $50k+

Prices have sky rocketed. I remember back when I 6538 service dial could be had for between 18 to 20k, but those days are long gone.

Also, keep in mind that the two same pieces that you might see on ebay, just sit on there week after week for a reason..

First rule is to shop the buyer not the watch.

figuring the piece you pictured above contains a fake dial and the insert is altered; assuming everything else is original and undamaged, like the case, 1030 mov, crown/tube, bezel, crystal retaining ring, crystal, caseback, visible serial.. What you have is maybe 25k in parts.

I have seen a 6538 with reprinted dial, relumed hands and aftermarket insert sell for 22k a few years ago. The prices have gone up since then.

If you find a reputable dealer that has one in the future, they can ask what ever they want because you will be hard pressed to find one else where.

In regards to this watch above, if you trust the seller and can view the watch in person to confirm the rest of the watch is legit and all there, then this could be a project piece. But understand, that the chances you will ever come across any kind of original rolex dial and matching hand set to put in it, will be slim to none. So it's important that you will be happy with the watch as it sits, because chances are, you will be stuck with it like that.

Otherwise, hold out for a piece that is the way you want it to be. Could take years, but it's worth it if you really want that reference.

My two cents on the matter.

If you're not sure it's legit walk away...
There are reputable dealers that won't give you that concern

At this price point you may want to look at reputable auctions...
