The pilot has landed!

So I picked up the pilot 5524g yesterday after a wait of about 6 months. I wasn’t expecting it until the end of this year, so was a nice surprise to get the call early. I think there have been quite a few deliveries in Q1, and I’m guessing this is due to production now switching to the 5524r for at least the next few months.

As we all know the 5524 was a controversial piece when it launched in 2015. I certainly didn’t like it from the first photos released by Patek.

Seeing live photos and trying it on totally changed my opinion and I knew this was a watch that would end up in my collection.

Having now had the watch for a day I thought I’d share my early thoughts:
- I love the case dimensions. Something I really like is a flat case back, with a thicker middle case and the 5524 suits my taste perfectly here.

- It’s quite a thick watch, but because of the above it feels perfectly balanced and in proportion. Coupled with the weight of white gold it feels very nice.

- It’s got a vibe different to any other Patek I know. It feels casual, unlike the aquanaut which I’d call sporty, and the Nautilus which I’d call sport chic. You want to put it on and chill out for a few hours.

- The dial is big and beautiful. I love the vintage style of the numerals and how the white gold catches the light.

- The dial is a very dark blue, but looks closer to black in most light. I’m a little disappointed in the colour, I did think it was going to be bluer.

Overall I’m very pleased and love its style. I’m trying to get a blue calf strap, which would give it a very nice alternative look.

A couple of photos attached below.

These are great pics. I must admit the watch is still not for me but these great live shots definitely takes it off the "never" list. Congrats on a great incoming.

Big congratulations!!
This was my first venture into Patek, and I’m very glad they created this model. Suits my casual attire/lifestyle very well. I’ve ordered a couple straps for it as well.
Hope you enjoy it ...wear it in good health!

The blue strap is very hard to find and unlikely to be around much longer. If you can find one, grab it

Funny, sad and partially true.

Little details like the blued hands, the shape of the hand on the date wheel, the lumed numbers and the large crown combined with the blue dial make it a fantastic Patek. Russ is correct about how it’s sits flat on your wrist and is well
proportioned for a 42mm watch. The buckle is pretty awesome too.

Indeed. Spending time with the 5522 helped me realize that. And to be honest the 5524G is much more interesting and the original execution of this idea. As you may know, I am into vintage watches too and this has a vintage charm. All in all a really great watch.... hard to resist!

The blue dial will jump- just takes the right light. When it does, it’s sublime
