How long does it take for a watch to be considered vintage?

I am wondering how long does it take for a watch to be considered "a vintage watch" for instance is a 16800 tritium considered vintage? How about 16800 "swiss" only...? Seems to me that an 18 years old + watch is a little more than "pre-own" but somehow it doesn't seem old enough to be vintage material...?

I would love to hear what people think.

It’s a rhetorical question and the answer to your question will vary depending who you ask.

To me, vintage means 4 digit, plexi. To others it might be 20 years or what have you.

The real question is collectibility. A 16520 is not vintage but it is very collectible. Just about any out of production tool Rolex is collectible regardless of age. A ladies cocktail watch festooned with diamonds may be vintage but it is not collectible. Ask the right questions. :)

When it looks like something that's not made anymore

Example:
1675 - for sure
16710 - not so much, even though it's a nearly 30 year old model

Maybe it depends on whether you’re the buyer or the seller. ;)

That is an age old question asked many times on the forum. Here is a thread I put together regarding "what is vintage."

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=551004

Personally, I break it down into vintage and classics - with the classics being some of the later discontinued models.

Opinions vary on what is vintage. As an example, while I definitely consider the GMT 16750 vintage, others may not. The same thing goes for the Submariner 16800 matte dials. Both are vintage to me even though the 16800 has a sapphire crystal.

The classics really do not have a clear definition, just like when trying to define vintage, but many of the discontinued models are classics for me - such as the Zenith Daytona 16520, the GMT 16700, GMT II 16760 and 16710, later Submariner 5513s and 16610s, Explorer and Explorer IIs, some of the Datejust models and probably a few more models.

While we have this thread going, how do we distinguish between Rare, Scarce and Mint?

Makes sense. I usually refer to the ceramic Rolex as "modern" , although I am tempted lately to include any Luminova + as "modern as well" so classic for the in-between vintage and modern makes sense.

I remember when 16750s were “transitional” then they became ”rare” and the price doubled.

think this really only applied to the 16750 with matte dial. I think the gloss dial can still be had at a reasonable price whereas the 16750 is close to standard (non gilt, non chapter minute) 1675 prices now.
