16014 DJ, some questions.

Hi guys, I need a bit of advice here.

I kinda find myself in the market for a SS DateJust.

I know, wide selection. But I though I had it pretty much narrowed down to a 16234 with silver, stick dial and a Jubilee.

I know these are not technically vintage, but were the last generation to keep all the classic proportions that I prefer and some of these with the lug holes and tritium from the 90s have a bit of that vintage touch. I kinda liked the practicality of the sapphire and the modern(-ish) 3135 movement.

In looking for good options I just run across a 16014 in amazing condition. Being 85-ish production it has the modern Jubilee, which seems to have almost no stretch.

I don’t think I really mind having a plexi crystal (I have a BigBlock and a Speedy, so I know what to expect), I like the looks of the tophat and this watch will not be abused in any way. I am a bit more worried about the 3035 movement. I know little about these. Are there any considerations I should have ? Are these as serviceable and dependable as their successors ?

I will appreciate your comments. If everything looks good I may go vintage after all…

The difference between the 3035 and the 3135 is negligible – Rolex strengthened a few bits, but there remain advantages and disadvantages to both movements

I’ve had a SS/DJ with the 3035 on my wrist for over 30 years now, and it’s still ticking away to +2 seconds – no complaints - £500 for a service, parts are readily available, either from the RSC or an independent

Very slight darkening of the lume dots, (original dial and hands) – Jubilee bracelet is showing about 40% wear, so plenty of life in it yet ……

Here's some things which might be of interest. Enjoy your watch, I've worn a 3035 16030 for forty years this august.

Scroll down a bit on this one, there's a relevant comparison to the 3135 at one point
