The Reason I Prefer 5-Digit Subs Over The New Ceramics
Today I spent all day on the beach with my 4-year old building sandcastles and digging in the sand. After I got back to the condo, my bezel was stuck! Well, this hasn’t happened in years, but I know what to do.
Taping off the lug so that I can pop the bezel off with an expired Credit Card There....that was easy. Yuck!! Look at all that grime.... A little soap, water, and a soft toothbrush...... Now that looks better! Good as new and ratcheting flawlessly I love the older aluminum insert Rolex Sports watches. Definitely the sweet spot for me.

the tolerances on the ceramics are very tight. ive never had sand cause the bezel to sieze up...

The sand ground them off today.
This is my highly modified 16610LV. Shaved CGs, Chromalight dial and hands, Daytona crystal, fixed Lug bars, and black insert.

It's funny because that's an LV and actually sees hard use. Bravo for that.
Love the look without the crown guards and cyclops/monocle/date loupe device. I'm trademarking 'date loupe', btw. lol |

This was modified back when these things were affordable. Intrinsic value means little to me since I wear my watches and have no intention or interest in selling or trading any of them.

I prefer the ceramics, however this one of one you have there is so so sick. What a jewel.

It definitely happens with the 6-digit Cermamics. I’ve read about it several times here on the forum.

A good friend reluctantly sold it to me. I made a couple more Mods and it became what it is today. This has become my go-to diver that I use for actual diving.

I count myself quite lucky. I still have 2 other 16610LVs that are factory spec. I nearly traded one several years ago, but the deal fell through.......luckily

Very nice bespoke Sub. Agree on the user servicability. Daily use ceramics must store all kinds of crap under there.

WOW that’s a beautiful piece! Such is why I don’t really understand purists. Simply gorgeous and not “just another Sub” as some would say. Lovely!

Does it have to be an expired credit card? LOL. It’s kind of like cars... Older cars were so much easier to work on with just the basic tools... Nowadays cars have engines crammed into the bays making it so hard to get to anything and the need to have specialized tools.
Love the looks of the watch BTW! |

I definitely prefer the size and proportions of the 5 digit sports models over their 6 digit counterparts, but could never bring myself to purchase one back when they were current because of how I perceived the stamped clasps. That said, I’m still kicking myself for not buying a Kermit for MSRP years ago

I pretty much prefer most aspects of the 5 digit models...except for the dial and hands.

I am happy to report that my ceramic Sd40 survived heavy frolicking and playing with sand last weekend. Tried the bezel after seeing this thread.

Nice work, although I’ve never had any issues with sand getting behind my 116610 bezel. I have spent up to a week or more at the beach with it.
