Getting service on 5167 without your name on paper?

Hey folks,

My 5167 doesn’t have my name on it. Sadly. So I have been curious about what the process is to send it to Patek for paid service. Not warranty.

1. Do I have to go through an AD?

2. Does it have to have my name on papers for return/ownership?

I have the bill of sale, even appraisal on it from seller to demonstrate ownership, but I’m curious how the process usually is handled.

If I recall correctly, there was a controversy some time last year from HSWA whether they would honour a warranty without your name on it. In the end, the final word from Geneva was that the warranty follows the watch and name on the papers doesn't matter.

You can either go through an AD or get in touch with HSWA. I'd opt for the latter personally.

Is there an issue with your 5167?

Thankfully no! Not yet. But I saw some threads about 5167s here that peaked my interest.

By the way, i was able to secure a 5712 with my name on it. So I was wondering if it may be worth it getting my name on the 5167 too (trading in, and getting a new one).

Regarding HSWA, do they do insurance on watches etc when shipping? Do they handle it?

I’ve had to send out a Rolex once, and did it via AD. It was flawless.

Ps: not thinking of warranty, but paid service.

I would use USPS registered mail to send your watch to HSWA. You can use Fedex insured, but it will be more expensive.

For out of warranty service, the certifcate doesn't really matter.

the good news is a service on the 5167 isn't too expensive, it just takes forever given it's patek haha. Not sure it would be worth getting a new one just for that at this point. The 5712 you'll love though, congrats on that!

If the warranty is not expire, the warranty follows the watch not the name on the paper....

As long as the serial number on your watch isn't flagged as stolen, then you should be able to send it in for service with no issues.

Since it's a paid service, there'll be no issues as to whether or not it's in your name or not.

Even if the listed owner had it serviced previously, there's a presumption that whoever has possession of personal property is deemed the owner of it unless declared by the possessor otherwise.

I would NOT send to your watch through an AD. It will add at least two weeks to your service. I would send DIRECTLY to Stern. You do not need your name on papers for service work. They will look up the serial number to determine if the watch is under warranty.

I would always send any piece via my AD - it helps the relationship but more importantly it is their responsibility to insure it from the moment they take receipt until the moment you accept it back.
They will carefully note any existing damage on the receipt, if anything should happen either in transit or during service you are covered.

Sending the watch for servicing via your AD has some advantages and disadvantages.

If you live close to the AD where you purchase your watches from, then it is a good option. If you have to travel to get to your AD, then it may not always work well.

If you send in your watch via your AD and the service is taking a long time and you want a status update, you can't contact the Patek service dept directly. You will have to go through the AD for status updates. For some people, this is fine. For others, it can be frustrating having to get status updates from an intermediary.

ADs do not make any profit when sending your watch for servicing, unless they have Patek certified watchmakers doing the service in-house. They are offering a service to an existing customer by acting as an intermediary.

A lot of people here do not purchase watches new from an AD and so they don't have that existing AD relationship. So it doesn't help an AD financially to send a watch from a non-client in for service. I don't know if ADs add on a service charge in addition to the typical service fees. Older threads here suggest some ADs do that because it costs them money (shipping, insurance, etc) to provide this service to non-clients.

Paid service? They do not even ask to see the papers. Not an issue at all.

The only time I would go through an AD is for brand new warranty service. If its defective out the door why should I be out the shipping if I am near the AD. But if I have to ship to the AD, its just as easy for me to ship to PP. As posters have said going through an AD for warranty service on a new watch bought from them may grow the relationship and help you obtain hard to get pieces. If they see you had a crazy problem on a brand new watch, they may want to "make it up to you" on a future piece.

The best thing to do is have watch insurance on your watch yourself and not insure through the shipper. That way it is covered from all losses. If you do not carry insurance on your watches, take it to your AD who will insure the piece under their store policy or send it USPS Registered Mail (if in the US) which insures up to 50K and is absolutely reliable. Problem is RM is about the slowest way to send something. Rolex still sends and receives all their watches via Reg. Mail in the USA. PP used to use Reg. Mail but now uses FedEx.

This is what I plan to do for mine. Make a long weekend out of it.
