Reason for Lange 1 in yellow gold secondary market price

It seems the Lange 1 in yellow gold secondary market price is thousands lower than the equivalent white and rose gold varieties, at least according to asking prices I have seen. Reference 101.022 in particular. Is this because of the base metal, age of reference, general decreased demand for yellow gold? Appreciate any input. Thanks.

Many watch companies seem to have or at least had a price hierarchy when it comes to gold, namely that yellow is the least expensive, followed by pink/rose/red, with white as the most expensive. I've never really understood why except that, perhaps, some of the metals in the alloy for the white and possibly the pink/rose/red may be a bit more expensive but I'm guessing it's really more about creating an artificial hierarchy. For example, platinum as a metal has been less expensive than gold for years but platinum watches are always priced much higher than their gold counterparts, although part of this has to do with the fact that platinum is much more difficult to work with. The real reason, I suspect, has to do with this artificial hierarchy. Starting in the 1990s, the yellow "gold" color was fashionable with cheaper jewelry but now rose "gold" color seems to dominate cheaper jewelry and watches so there may be a resurgence in yellow gold's popularity. I really think it depends on what looks best on the watch and what you personally like best.

As to that particular Lange, I don't know, but I'd gladly take a couple thousand dollar savings for a yellow gold watch over a more expensive rose or white gold one, especially if I liked it better or just as well.

For me, its not an overwhelming amount of yellow gold, and I think the watch is damn near beyond reproach regardless of the base metal. I tend to think it's a marker of what metal is trendy at the moment but when the markets zigs, you zag.

I agree that I think trend does have an influence on it (not all, but some). It certainly seems that YG has fallen out of favor in recent times for RG/PG/WG, which would probably mean it's a bit harder to move YG inventory. That's my take, anyways.

Strangely enough AP actually prices YG variant RO higher than RG.
