The case-back looks fake to me. Seems like it's been laser engraved instead of stamped. The insert I believe is service one and hands patina doesn't seem to match the dial.

Some meaningful photos and more details would be useful.

Pics

Cant seem to get the pics to the right size.
Just wondering what to look for relating to this model. I.e. case back engravings or anything that would help point out if it was a good example apart from the normal case condition etc.
Does the case back have 5514 engraved or 5513? also similar with the case. If Rolex provide paperwork stating its a 5514 model is this proof that it is a COMEX? etc as long as the serial number matches the paperwork

Yup, looks like junk; especially with "that" caseback and fony handset AND the way too fat midcasing for the period...

not mistaken... hard pass and move on ...

Not necessarily. There were some with no logo dial and a he valve.

Also do they all have small numbers on the 6 o clock position on the caseback rear? Anyone have pics of the comex inscriptions?

Size depends on the year it was released. There are early models with small numbers, then mid size numbers and the latest with big numbers. Let me guess your small size numbers, 330?

Info

I am going to view the watch this week. Just trying to do as much research as possible. Most people think 5514 without comex on the dial are fake. I happen to think otherwise but am gathering as much info as possible. Can someone send a pic of the 3 figures? And where they should be etc?

Small figures

Why did you ask if the numbers on the caseback where 330?
Are these commonly the faked ones? Are there any to look out for?

Dials without comex are not necessarily fake. I think they are called pre-comex dials, the very first models. If it is 330 on the bottom of the case with small engrave, then I would suggest you to stay away form that watch. It will be fake with potentially gen parts.

I think that once you start to get to this level then you should be looking to buy from a specialist dealer with a AAA reputation.......and be prepared to pay top dollar. If you don't then you are taking a significant risk - good luck with your search.

Great advice.
And Davey, do you trust the seller 100%? Does he have solid references? If not, then you're looking at a dubious watch, from a dubious seller. Is that something you want to risk tens of thousands of dollars on?

Yea the 3 digits are 330!
The serial is 52938**
Sounds not strictly 100%
Should all the 3 digits be individual? Hence 330 is a common fake?

Sounds a bit iffy...I understand your predicament, its difficult to tell unless you've had countless years of examining/opening/fixing/selling these specialist pieces....can you not hook up with one of the comex experts based in the UK?...this I feel would be your best route....real or fake these are the people to tell you straight

Update

I have had a lot of generous help for which i am eternally greatful.
People on this forum have again come forward with constructive advice and opinions as well as their good and bad experiences. Looks like the search goes on i will be giving this watch a miss as there are just too many questions.
Kindest regards and thanks to all especially those who checked serial numbers etc your time saved me cash and a huge mistake. I thought sticking to a 5514 would help keep the fakes away (hev etc) but i have learned again.
