First Rolex: BlackSub Date or GMTII Batman

Hey guys! Been lurking on this forum a fair bit and new to Rolex watches. Visited/called over 20 ADs in London and on the outskirts and finally managed to get an AD to put me on their waiting list for a Black Sub Date (6 months wait).

A different AD also put me on their registration of interest list for the GMT Batman - but super skeptical on whether I'll ever get the call for that one.

If I do get the call for the Sub down the line, should I go for it or wait out for the GMT... Appreciate any thoughts

I would get the sub personally. The quintessential Rolex sport model and the most versatile. Add a gmt later if you like.

I want to add a black sub to my collection at some point but I'd like a vintage looking one like a 6538 or similar.

I'd say get the Sub.

Sub. It's the more iconic piece of the two.

If you travel often thru different time zones, get the GMT.

If you snorkel, scuba dive, sail, surf, fish, or repair toilets with your left hand, get the Sub.

If you do none of the above, but want the most iconic Rolex, the one watch that is ROLEX, get the Sub.

Overall the sub...you can own many watches in your life, but there is something about a basic sub date that will simply never outwear its aesthetic if that makes sense.

GMTII for me as I would find it to be more useful. The Sub is a fantastic watch, but the look of the GMTII has always spoke to me more. If you're able to get a BLNR, that would really seal the choice for me!

I had this same question and answered it with BLNR (waiting at the moment). The reasons why:

1. Function
2. I see a lot of Subs.

Thanks guys for all the replies! Love both watches but always felt as though the GMT blue black bezel had this incredible and unique look to it. But i guess like most of you guys pointed out its down to what I'm looking for in my first Rolex! Still undecided but I guess its going to be a waiting game from here on out anyway haha!

Both are fantastic watches.

If a Sub became available, buy it, wear it and love it, if a BLNR ( I cannot calll it Bat... ) becomes available, it is then the choice has to be made if you cannot afford to keep them both.

I bought a 14060M and been on the list for the Batman GMT for 6 months. Not having a previous spend with either local AD sure isn’t helping. Hard to establish a relationship when you can’t buy a watch.

I'd get the Batman. The Sub is way too common.

I’m also in your same position. Deciding between the two to hopefully pull the trigger around Christmas time.

Both watches are amazing, I tend to lean to the BLNR, but at the end of the day I know I’ll end up owning both at some point so it’s just a matter of what I can get first.

Good luck, looking forward to your decision - can’t go wrong either way!

Sub is the alpha Rolex. It’s the legend for a reason.

I've bought the BLNR first then added the Sub C Date. The BLNR feels more special than the Sub but if it's going to be your own watch for a while I would go with the Sub first.

Go with the Blnr first...either way you come out a winner ...pick any Rolex model line and you always come out on top...so pick one you love

So sayeth the TRF Sub Mafia-types....as usual.

The Sub is the King of Rolexes in the same way Budweiser is the King of Beers Ask any Bud-drinker and they'll tell you it's the greatest. Budweiser/Submariner = Bud/Sub...they even shorten up their names in a similar fashion and they're practically anagrams. Obviously, not a coincidence. No more proof needed.

OP, the GMT Master of course. It's the alpha Rolex legend for a reason, plus it's so much nicer and more useful with multiple time zone display. Always has been for 65 years. So ignore the bleating of herd who believe their own pasture is the center of the universe, they only seek to increase their own numbers. Nobody even dives with a Sub. You'll notice that most Sub photos here show them in a sink, walking on the beach with an ocean in the background, by the pool, in a glass of water, at the lake. I mean, big deal, any Rolex oyster can do that.

Plus, new Subs have weird, boxy lugs and, also, a Sub Date isn't even the original "legend". Back in the day they had to add a date function/cylops to the Sub, making it look like how GMT Masters have always looked in order for more people to buy it after 15 years of niche-level sales.

GMT Master BLNR= Hands down best choice. Awesome-looking. No need to try to justify your dive watch purchase by taking pictures of it "submerged" under a stream of running tap water. Sub date = Ordinary. Common. The Budweiser of Rolex. And what's up with those lugs anyway, did the robot break down halfway through machining the case?
