Daytona 116500 versus HODINKEE 10th Anniversary Speedmaster

Just wanted to get some thoughts on what everyone thinks of the new HODINKEE Speedmaster and how it stacks up against a modern classic like the 116500....let the games begin!

Wow, it sold out quickly all 500. It looks nice to me, Omega could have sold 2000 easily. As to compared to the Daytona, good luck getting yours.

I love the speedy moon watch. Hodinkee’s take, not so much.

Normally I'm in the Speedmaster>Daytona camp, but I amend that to say any Speedmaster other than this technicolor festival of parts bin pieces.
For $6.5K you can pick up 2 pretty decent Pro's or a pre owned GSOTM, or a clever Racing Master Chronometer ...

I understand the very personal inspiration behind it, but therein lies the problem...

I think a lot of people are going to be really disappointed missing out on this one for two reasons.

1. Omega rarely if ever does limited editions, ESPECIALLY of the Speedmaster. Who knows how long they will have to wait for another change to purchase a LE Speedy.

2. They missed out on a watch that holds tremendous sentimental value for Benjamin Clymer.

I think "Speedy Tuesday" will take on a whole new meaning for that lucky 500.

This thread is the first time I've seen this particular Speedmaster. Hope it will be the last, but I don't expect to be that lucky.

Why pay $6k for a tribute when the original ref can be had for $2k. Cool watch but looks like all hype.

Damn your eyes Sir.

That watch makes my Air-King look even more beautiful...with its Rolex green and the yellow crown....that omega has the most hideously bright colours in a watch face.. I have ever seen or hope to see again..

(Edit: I'm now sensing sarcasm in the original post I quoted. If true, well done Sir.)

I'm glad Benjamin Clymer has had the opportunity to build a watch (or a remake of a watch) that holds great sentimental value to him.
For the other 499 owners that aren't Mr Clymer (or very close family/friends, or people who worship him), the sentiment factor means nothing.

It will tick the "Limited" box for those that care about exclusivity or insta-flips, but aesthetically, it's a big no for me.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the hour numbers font is a bit of a mis-match for this watch?

It does not stack up at all to the Daytona 116500

I thought it was a pro, but just another chrono with splashes of colors. Pass.

If I was a Speedmaster collector and had a deep collection I would consider adding this watch. I think it is cool in a semi-retro way but not for me.

I like it, I like that Omega takes chances and has variety. If you don’t care for a LE, don’t buy one. Rolex puts a fragil piece of ceramic on the Daytona and everyone looses there minds, sign me up to pay 8k over msrp. I don’t know if I would pick this speedy, but I like the speedy over the Daytona, can’t be the history.

Amen. The Daytona is stunning but lots of Rolex “fanboy” frenzy over nothing burgee incremental changes. Shout out to Rolex for an amazing mind f—- on all of us.

As I use the chrono often in my line of work, function of a watch is important to me. Also, let’s be honest, I love the Daytona and have one, but it’s history is not even close. It’s famous because Paul Newman wore it, but the speedy went to the moon.

I'm going to take the 116500 over this any day.......but yes I do favor some Speedmasters over the 116500. In terms of functionality I feel like the Speedy is way ahead because I never go in the water with chronos so water resistance is never an issue.....but the fact that I have to unscrew the pushers all the time on the Daytona just to use the chronograph makes it inconvenient. If I wear the watch with the pushers unscrewed all the time.....something just looks odd to me on the wrist. Speedy is 100% ready for action any time!
