Friend with $6k to spend on a watch, any suggestions?

He really likes the DJ 41, fluted, oyster, blue dial, but that’s about 3K beyond his budget. I showed him a very similar appearing Tudor Style, but that’s about 3K under his budget.

I figure if I had $6k to spend on my first nice watch, I’d try to spend as much of that as possible.

He’s more looking for something on the dressier side, not as interested in any sport models.

Any other watches from any other brands you guys would suggest he look at?

he should save up for what he really wants, and/or go for pre-owned

I would go with a Milgauss, white or black dial

I agree, my first suggestion to him was to save or sell something else.

I told him about preowned and my own experiences with that, which have been fine. He’s understandably a little nervous, it’s his first big watch purchase. It’s hard to just dive into a preowned purchase unless you’ve done a whole lot of research yourself first.

He wants to have a date wheel, otherwise all the other Rolexes mentioned above would have been great choices.

yeah that's true regarding preowned for your first. unfortunately there's really nothing that would take the place of a dj aside from the op/explorer as others have mentioned. so if he wants a date wheel you should convince him that he will end up regretting settling with something other than a dj lol

Save up more and the DJ if that's what he likes.

Good luck to him and all of us wanting more!

Can get a preowned DJ II for about 600-700 over his current budget. Not that much more. I know it’s a big purchase but go preowned and get s great value.

New or barely used DJ 36 from a trusted seller or a Grand Seiko such as the SBGH205G.

Great suggestions!

I think that for folks new to this, it’s very hard to have appreciation for a Grand Seiko. For people with more knowledge and experience, they’re amazing watches. For people without, well, they see them as Seiko’s.

He seems pretty set on a DJ, so he’s going to work a little more on the funding.

I also think for the nuts like us that post on these kinds of forums, the AD experience is nothing particularly special. But for newbies, it’s got to be a real treat. Which obviously you don’t get preowned.

Speedmaster would be a great option, or save up and get what you really like.

Save the $3k extra for a DJ41.

Buying something for the sake of it wont last long and any compromises in this game will inevitably end up costing you alot more.

For $6k I would say the best choice is the 39mm explorer 1. Unless he has 7”+ wrists maybe recommend a dj 36 as well? Classic size, timeless design and definitely can be had for $6k pre owned.

Good advice. Tell your friend to look at pictures on eBay, DO NOT BUY. Click on the filter ‘completed sales’ and you can see what things sell for. Read the forum threads. Look a Bob’s website. Lots of good photos and price points. Not a recommendation to buy.

A lot Rolex owners buy on emotion only to find out a month later their attitude has changed. I’ve gone through 6 Rolexes before settling in on my favorite two. That was expensive!

I was in a very similar situation and ended settling for a watch that was not my goal..... you'll always have the itch of having your true watch so I dont recommend buying something different just because you can at the moment ! To make a long story short, I ended up selling the first watch, started saving a bit more and went out to buy my true watch. Lesson learned.
