Platinum DD 36 vs DD 40

I was wondering what people thought here about the DD 40 vs the DD 36? I feel like the 36 is what a DD is supposed to look like in terms of the domed Bezel and shape of the case. The DD 40 seems to be the right size for the time and ha s bigger wrist presence. Is there a preference here of one vs the other. Is the traditional 36 ‘the real thing’ vs the new comer? Is the 36 too small in today’s world of larger watches? What are people’s thoughts?

I think it comes down to wrist size and what the wearer prefers in terms of presence. IMHO the 40 really doesn’t wear all that large. Rolex really got the proportions right on the 40

The DD 40 is actually 39.xx mm and the proportions are right compared to the old DD 41

The DD 36 is the classic size and some people will say it is ‘small’ by today’s standards unless your wrist is huge it looks fine. 36 is the classic day date. The 36 ‘wears’ larger than your typical 36mm watch.

I have never really had on the 40 for more than a minute but this is my 36. I just re-acquired this back in April for a ceramic Daytona. I have received a ton of compliments on it which is interesting only because it doesn’t look like much. It really flies under the radar and once my friends hold it they are blown away by the mass. It really is very understated. There are things about the 40 I really do like, particularly the diagonal motif dial and the fact that the bracelet will never stretch. Sometimes I wonder if it’s a tad to small or not when I’m wearing it with short sleeves. It has come close to being a daily wearer with maybe my Pepsi or Sd 43 as part of the summer rotation when I go to the beach. Yesterday’s though..I wore the DD and it really can be an ‘only watch’ as it went in the ocean and every thing.

My vote is for the 36 as the classic. Unfortunately, the majority of 36mm configurations today are far more towards the jewelry end of the spectrum, with only 1-2 non-diamond dial colors for each metal (plat has a 3rd), one of which is always white Roman (only YG offers stick).

The 40 includes blues, blacks, slates, etc. The 40 also comes with those angular 3-dimensional Roman numerals (which probably can't be shrunk down enough for the 36).

That being said, were someone to tell me I was going to be handed a new DD to wear, and to pick one, it would be a 36mm platinum with silver dial regardless of other color availability.

I own a 40mm Day-Date and I think it fits me the best, even after trying some 36mm back in the day. I think it all comes down to preference about what you like, and if you are a fan of the classic size and you love the look on you - then go for it!

For me I've had to 36mm DDs and really want a 40. Both the 36ers are gone and didn't stick. I think the 40s are the perfect size.

Obviously…I have been thinking of the DD 40 as I really love some of the things about it. The dial, the upgraded movement and bracelet. One of the things I wonder though is do I love that under the radar magic where it’s ‘just for me’ kind of thing.

It depends on what you like and the size of your wrist. I own a DD II and like the size but I have a 7.5-7.75 inch wrist. The 36 mm DD looks and feels small to me. The answer is buy what you like and wear it and enjoy. I would get a DD40 over the DD 36.

Some folks say the 40mm is actually smaller than its stated size. But, to me it wears bigger than 40mm on my 6.5mm wrist. I much prefer the 36mm which allows the bracelet to accent the case. Unless one has a larger wrist, the 40mm is all head and the beauty of the President bracelet is really lost.

All about your wrist size. 36 would be a massive no for me

i think it has to come down to the wrist size but there's now been a resurgence of the 36 among celebs (from what i've seen). i feel like in the past few years the 36 was dismissed completely even when it came to wrist size and a lot of people went with the 40 just because the 36 was "for women". both of them can coexist and it shouldn't be based on some kind of stigma

I'd almost always take a 36 over a 40mm watch, but there's something off with the proportions of the 36mm DD in Platinum IMO.

It’s rarely about wrist size, unless you have an off the charts, 8.5” wrist. It’s just about your own style.

Platinum DD 36 vs DD 40

I prefer the 40 but nothing wrong with the 36. If you want a 36, then wear it.

The current platinum 36 or the previous? Asking because I'm wondering if the bezel is a factor (since the proportions aren't any different AFAIK vs the gold versions).

I have both and it really comes down to what you like. the case on the 40mm is different from the 36mm. It is thinner which I dont particularly care for. There are differences between the 2 watches for sure. You have to pick which one speaks to you when its on your wrist. Thats the only way to buy any watch I think.

If I were you, I would call it day. 40 is better looking but just too heavy.

I think the 36mm works great a "vintage" watch, I have a 18038 (1989 from memory) and I love it, best value Rolex at the moment in my opinion ($12K will get you a gold Rolex!!)

That said, whilst I genuinely appreciate the classic look of it, If I was buying new I wouldn't try to recreate that classic look and would buy a 40mm, if they ever go back to MRSP I may well buy one.

A lot of comments on wrist size and it being too small, all depends on your style, Tony Soprano pulled it off just fine.
