I would consider myself an enthusiast. Dont think I'd buy enough watches to be considered a "collector". I'm going to cap my watches at 3 maybe 4.

I’m deep in. I’ve been an enthusiast since I was 10. My wife would say I’m obsessed now. Will be in Switzerland the next three days getting my fix!

I’m relatively new to the watch world, but learning a lot.

Love watching watch making videos and learning about movements.

I consider myself an amateur enthusiast at this point.

Only one Rolex so far, but I have a small collection of 4 watches as of now.

I have a lot of them I’m interested in and want to acquire. I’m limiting myself to a total of 12 that I’ll wear and keep in rotation, but it will take time to get the pieces I’m interested in.
I won’t go over this number to keep it manageable.

I have Rolex, Sinn, Porsche DS, and Omega Speedy.

I have 3 other Rolexes I’m planning on getting for certain. And another that I may.
But those three are next up on my radar, in addition to an Oris special edition one I’m looking at and have been offered at a very good price.

After that I’ve got a Panerai which is doable, a Royal Oak, and Nautilus I’d love to have, if those stars ever align, which they may not ever.
Also would like to add a VC to the collection. I really love the look of those watches.

I am working on getting to this point again. I used to own one single watch. An Omega PO. Sent it in for service after a decade on my wrist and that’s when it happened. I drank the Rolex cool aid. It has been an exciting experience to learn about the hobby. And after owning a dozen or so Rolexes I am getting to the point where I want a single watch again.

I love all my watches.

When I wear them, I find myself looking at it often.

What does that puts me at? LoL

I have a goal of having just one watch per brand and just sell off extras if I want to rotate a brand.

I started as a fan boy (1 watch will do), than I became an enthusiast (learning all the specs, tech, and calibres) (I just want a air, land, and sea 3 combo collection and satisfied for life), now I am a collector (I fail to depart with any of my watches as much I make excuses every purchase). sigh...

I am not a collector. I have a collection... but I'm not a collector. The goal is not to collect, the goal is to enjoy the pieces, try different types of watches and sizes and brands and see what I like. I'm not collecting with a goal to collect more. But I'm always looking for something new... but not to add... to maybe have a collection that better fits my tastes and wants. Is that a collector?

Good example: I have 2 gmts and no submariner, and I'm wondering if i should get rid of the BLNR for a sub. Definitely keeping the pepsi. Maybe the sub is a better fit for days at the beach, days at the pool, kids parties that sort of stuff. Splitting hairs obviously... but i kinda want a sub. And having a sub, plus a BLNR, plus a pepsi is just too much overlap in the looks department (already too much with the 2 gmt). Is this the thought process of a collector or an enthusiast? I see that as an enthusiast.

I'm an enthusiast these days.

I have enough watches and for me it's all about the experience of wearing something I like when I'm out and about.

The odd piece might join the collection at some point, another one could go, but I'm not actively pursuing anything.

I'm happier since I quit obsessing about the next piece. I'm much more relaxed and content with what I've got. Lackluster AD experiences don't even bother me anymore.

Both, I guess. I've be a time piece enthusiast since I was a young man and my grandmother gave me a watch for Christmas (the only Seiko automatic in the 1987 Sears catalog). I was fascinated by the sweep seconds hand rather than the tick of my dad's quartz Seiko and set out to learn everything I could about timekeeping.

I've got far too many watches, many of which I don't wear frequently so I'm definitely a collector. Always been into Rolex but my early ventures into the brand were hampered by a lack of funds and youthful stupidity. Now I have the means and the patience to maintain and slowly grow a nice collection.

I currently have three Rolex that I rotate through (DJ, Daytona, Sea Dweller) and also have a Vostok Amphibia that is my hands down, all time favorite cheap watch and gets wrist time. Also have two Breitlings that need serviced which I will do some day.

Making plans to add a DD40 for my 50th birthday. I might actually be done then as far as Rolex goes.

Would also like to add a Grand Seiko at some point with the 9F quartz movement.

I find it to be quite liberating. My 10 year old son, who wears a Swatch daily, is starting to know the watch as a part of me, which is cool. My first word as a kid was "clock," and I used to have recurring dreams about watches in grade school, so I'm still a watch psycho, whether I wear one watch or twenty.

Hmmm, I consider myself more of a traveler of both time and space (to be where I have been).

I like mechanical watches, I have a few. I only buy what I like and will wear. I don’t consider my self as either of the labels but I’m definitely passionate about the watches I own

Can't say I agree with the OPs re-definition of "collector". At the moment I'd describe myself as a hoarder, with the hope that the hoard of watches turns into a collection at some point ( a good collection in my view requires some original thought, effort and time).

Most of us want to own 1000 different watches. I am willing to do it 6 or 8 at a time...so yes I occasionally buy and sell.

I guess I am 180 degrees from the OP in defining a collector vs enthusiast. If I just kept buying and never selling I would have a huge collection and would own a bunch of watches purely for the sake of owning them (collecting them).

I suppose someone who keeps his number of watches low but buys and sells to have variety could be called a collector.? I just wouldn't ever define it that way.

After almost 20 years spent shaping up my collection (adding and letting go), I've reached a point where I'm content and happy just wearing and enjoying my pieces without thinking about the next addition. I've taken a back seat for 1 1/2 year, which I find much more relaxing than being obsessively on the hunt. My wallet is happier too.

I get pleasure from rotating through my watches, either divers, dress watches or dressy sports pieces. I consider myself lucky and I'm very grateful for being able to wear what I like within my means.

I also enjoy reading about other people's experiences and tastes. I consider myself an enthusiast first and foremost these days.
