I've been reading TRF for a couple of weeks now and I've decided to sign up and say hi to everyone.

My very modest collection includes a black face Rolex Air King (mid to late 80's vintage) that I bought in 1989 for and a white face Tudor Chronograph (pre-Tiger Woods model) that I bought in 1996. Prior to buying my Air King, I have NEVER had a watch last more than one year, so I'm extremely happy with my watches in particular and Rolexes in general.

I've recently been developing a bit of fever for another watch and I've narrowed my choices to the Sub LV and the TT Blue Sub. I really like the Maxi-Dial on the LV, but the "out the door" prices are making the TT Blue Sub look better and better.

When I bought that Air King in 1990, it really got me hooked on Rolex. That is the first watch I've ever owned that lasted more than a year. The Tudor is the only other watch that has lasted more than a year. I admit that I didn't have high end watches, but I tried Casios, Bulovas, Timexes, Seikos, Benrus, and just about every other brand on the market that could be had for ~$100 (that's 80's dollars, not current dollars). At $75-$120 per disposable watch, and using 2-3 per year, a SS Rolex is actually a money saving bargain over the long haul.

This may be a dumb question, but are Rolexes THAT good, or are other watches THAT bad, or is it a combination of the two? Several times, I've been tempted to get another watch (Omega Moonwatch, Swiss Army automatic, or other watch in the $500-$2000 range, but frankly I'm afraid to risk my money on anything other than a Rolex or Tudor.

I admit that I'd never owned a high end watch before, but I'd tried Seikos, Bulovas, Casios, Timexes, and just about every other brand on the market that sold for less than ~$200 in 1980's and 70's dollars. At ~$75-$150 twice to three times per year vs buying a Rolex once, I think that a SS Rolex is about the best watch bargain out there.

Here's a kinda dumb question for y'all. Are Rolexes really THAT good, or are other watches THAT bad, or some combination of the two?

Many times, I've been tempted to get another watch. Maybe an Omega Moonwatch or possibly a Swiss Army automatic, but frankly, I'm afraid to risk my dollars on anything other than a Rolex or Tudor after my past experiences.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Rolex watches are good, but other brands are worthy as well, no doubt about that. A Rolex might hold it's value a little more than some other brands, but any good brand name mechanical watch if it smiles at you is not really wasting your money.
