What would be your first Rolex?
Great forum, thanks to all the contributors and moderators.
I am a t-shirt and jeans kind of a guy. In addition to a G-Shock, Seiko diver (GADA) and a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time (dress watch in addition to Cartier, below) - I own two "serious" watches: - Tudor BB Burgundy (with "oyster" bracelet) - Santos de Cartier (medium) Long term goals are DD or one of the several models I am admiring from afar - from PP, VC, JLC, AP. I seem to be drawn to TT Rootbeer - 127711CHNR. Price-wise this belongs to a long term goal territory for me. I also enjoy some DJ, OP and YM configurations and somehow after I tried it, even Wimbledon, TT, jubilee, slate looked good on me. I also enjoy many other watches from other brands in that 3,000 - 8,000 range. Watches will be passed to my young children once they are ready to enjoy them in some shape and form. Lots of hard work and sacrifice. If you were me - entry level Rolex or skip and work towards long term goal? Thanks. Last edited by fqw2022; 24 January 2024 at 05:37 PM.. Reason: omission |

Even "entry level" references are $7-10k. If you really love the 127711CHNR, that's about half way there. Keep saving for the one you really love!

I'd work towards the long term goal and skip "entry level", unless you actually prefer the latter. Me personally, I like the YM and that was my first Rolex.

Welcome to the forum
Keep in mind these are only my opinions and guesses based on your post … It seems to me you are attracted to more dressy references, if I’m reading you right. The DJ is perfect place to start your Rolex journey IMHO. Lots of dial, metal and bracelet varieties to choose from, and it’s a classic Rolex. |

Tee shirt and Jeans can wear anything. I went Sub date till I tried it on and compared to SD43. I bought the 43. Awesome for all but ( to me) fancy dress up. That’s my Cartier. DateJust is a really nice every day. thats what my wife wears (Green 36). I do eyeball Explorers and thing they would make a fantastic first daily wear if I didn’t like divers as much.

I'd keep saving towards the CHNR. It's not too far of a stretch from some of the others that you mentioned.

If you like the CHNR, get it. Personally, I prefer the Submariner or BLNR.

T shirt and jeans but perhaps enjoy something with a bit more style? Would go blue dial, smooth bezel DJ41 on jubilee.

Always the Submariner as a start for me if you have the wrist to wear it comfortably. If not then a classic 36mm DJ.

Entry level is OP - so if you want the TT Rosegold GMT, get it. Easier to get than some of the others mentioned here.

I say just save for the TT if that’s what you desire. You wouldn’t be disappointed in any of the other options, but the other options will just put your end goal further out. Just get the one you really want.

Depends on your long term goals. If you want one, and it’s the TT CHNR, get it! If you want to start collecting Rolexes, get an Explorer to start, or an Oyster Perpetual. They are all great watches.

Thank you all for your comments. Will update, sooner or later, depending on decisions along the way. There is something powerful in childhood inspiration and interest disappearing and then coming back decades later!

Also an excellent comment. If the OP genuinely likes a SS DJ, Explorer, OP, etc., then by all means, get one. They're all great in their own right. If you'll always look at it thinking "what if I would've just saved for a little longer..." then skip the "intermediary" watch.

It has to be a Submariner. The Sub offers too much class.

Get the one you want. However, if you’re planning on changing your financial situation such that you can have more funds available in the future for watches then it doesn’t matter.
Cocktail Time is a great pick. |
