Quoted £520 for a speedy service with a local(ish) Omega service centre. Good deal or no deal? (Cal 1861).

Sounds like the going rate. Omega Service Centers in the USA get USD $750.

The are quite comprehensive. You might check with them for parts that are/aren't included in that, but in addition to the usual components (mainspring, crown, tube, chrono push-pieces, and seals), I believe this price also includes replacement of worn movement bits such as wheels, gears, levers, etc. as needed.

I was watching this youtube channel where the guy services all kind of movements. It kinda put everything in perspective how much work goes into such a thing.

It's still a business that needs to make money, needs to pay their people, have all sorts of other costs, you pay for their time and knowledge, ... and depending on the complication of your watch it makes it more difficult so it all made sense to me.

Everyone needs to make a buck. I can pay 10 usd for a beer at a bar or drink one at home for 2 usd.

According to Omega's website the UK service price is £700 for a mechanical chronograph. If they have a good reputation and the service is done using Omega parts for £520 I think you are quids in.

That’s what I thought. Chronos always cost more to service anyway given the more complex movement.

Barretts of Tavistock. They are an Omega Certified Service Centre so use Omega parts, got referred to them by a Service Centre close to me who has a 9 week wait. I just checked Omega’s website and yeah £700. Last time i checked it was £550.

Steel is still showing on the Omega UK website as £550.
Mine went in through a service agent about three weeks ago - I’ll post how much I pay when it comes back.

I haven’t heard anything since I dropped it off, but they said expect five or six weeks.

If it’s an older model, with tritium, I would not have it polished. Also, they may tell you, once they have it disassembled, that you should replace the bezel insert, dial, and hands. Do not do it. It will destroy the value of the watch. I made this mistake a few years back. Good luck with your service.

All the correspondence i have had has been very pleasant. Almost want to get it serviced just because of how nice they are. I was referred to them by Robert Reeves (who have a waiting liat going into April). Who have you used?

It’s from 2009. I wouldnt want anything on the outside replacing, to be honest it’s in good condition so probably wouldnt need it. I have stipulated no polishing (except perhaps between the lugs as it is mostly on a strap and there are marks from the bracelet end links visible).

I haven't yet. I dropped my speedy on my stag weekend, dinged a lug and looked into getting it laser welded. Upon research and talking to various specialist Barretts came up in conversation- even though they do not laser weld. In the I didn't proceed because, well, it was a.good stag do!

If you do use them I would be interested to hear what your thought are on their service.

If I had a Speedmaster that was pushing the 10 years old mark - it would almost make sense to just buy a new one

Shop around & get a new one cash for 20% off retail
Sell the original one
Hopefully the sale price -v- new price lower than £700

Precious metal is £700. Apart from having the new bracelet, i don’t see any benefit to selling and buying a new one. In 10 years time will i have to buy another one?

My Speedmaster came back exactly five weeks to the day after I dropped it off at a small family jewellers. They’re not an Omega AD, but apparently are an agent for servicing.

It came back in a zip up Omega case with a few parts returned in a plastic bag. The crown, pushers, and spring bars were in the bag, along with the original hesalite crystal.
I’ve now got a beautiful, pristine, scratch-free watch with a two year Omega warranty, complete with plastic warranty card.

I paid £595, which I assume is the £550 detailed on the Omega website for the service, plus £45 for the new crystal. I took it in because I felt something snap - ‘ping’, to be more accurate - when winding the watch. The mainspring, I assume. No spring in the bag of replaced bits that came back with the watch, but after a full wind, I got just over fifty hours before it stopped.

All in all, very happy with the service from the jewellers, the Omega service centre, and of course, my Speedmaster

Good to know. Was it the Jewellers that serviced it or did they send it to the service centre?

It was sent to Omega. Came back in a red zipped pouch and with a plastic card for the warranty.
Only unexpected thing - the new Hesalite crystal doesn’t have the Omega symbol in the centre, while the original did.

Thats annoying about hesalite. Was it badly damaged? The service centre near me offered to send it to Omega as he had long waiting list.
