Panerai -Disgrace?

Panerai should be ashamed of themselfs IMHO, even if it is no clear caseback, the movement should still say Panerai...

I saw some of the discussions leading up to this post. I thought for sure that the guy had bought a fugazzi, but apparently this is the cr-p Panerai pushes out. I even owned that watch at one point, bought it at the boutique and everything.

I have never been a fan of Richemont as they are a Corporate marketing/branding machine more than anything, and this is more proof of that. If this is really the movement in a special edition piece sold only in boutiques in is truly unforgivable in my opinion.

It sure have/will create serious badwill for Panerai, but still I am on the lookout for a 'Rad' but have to stay with the clear casebacks to be sure :-)

It is even more entertaining reading the posts from people that was flaming the OP for doing this, and ever more tragic to see the post from people stating that "this doesn't change a thing"!? It is a real "Emperor has no clothes" moment for Panerai IMO. If this post makes it further than p.com to Hodinkee etc if will be a real PR fiasco for Panerai/Richemont is rather severe implications. I, for one, am disgusted, if this is really true (still find it hard to believe).

That is pretty much it. Proving once for all it is all about the brand and the cult. I mean, no self-respecting watch maker/brand should put out this cr-p and market it as luxury product. It proves that the executives at Richemont has no respect for their customers IMO.

It is like selling a limited edition Ferarri and then putting a Lada engine under the hood and hoping no one ever open the hood. Sure, the Lada engine might be a fine workhorse, but that is beside the point.

The 318 Mov. is named OP XXIX by Panerai, not OP II like the actual boutique models...

It's just the 318 movement that is in question. The 4XX and 390 boutique series are basic, but decorated.
There obviously must be SOME reason they put this movement in (they can't be that dumb). I would love to find out what that reason is.

I was speechless when I saw pictures of the movement. A Chinese Seagull movement would have more pride than that!

Now I will be more aware of the "cheaper" limited edition models being released.

Lots of overreaction and excuse for haters to jump on Panerai for a snafu on a whole 150 watches. Was the same outrage given when J. Dowling popped the back on the Exp I which tens of thousands were made?

ok, ok, it's the same basic cheap (but robust) ETA movement that's just not decorated, but, man, it's a little weak to say the least. if for nothing else, have a little bit of pride and celebrate the brand a bit.

Ok, it's clear that the OP decorated movement is still the same than the other one, just a bit of make up applied for show. Not impressed.

I guess Richemont is trying to see how little they can do to charge the same prices?? Very disappointing.

Makes me feel that PAM is more a fashion brand than a watch brand now with actions such as this.

lets not go TOO far here......i mean, it's limited to 150 watches, it might have been a mistake, panerai might "fix" this given the strong reaction, and, anyway, the brand is aggressively developing its own movements and never hid the fact that its base movements were ETA work horses.

not being a PAM apologist here. if i owned one of those pieces, i'd be pretty disappointed.....just saying i'm trying not to overreact.
