Panerai don't make many of these. IMO one of the engineering feats of 2008 and well worth looking at through a glass caseback.
For the asking price it could have been in WG/Plat/RG or YG,NOT S/S !!

Panerai seems to be in the same tier as IWC

I read 2 pages before noticing this was an old thread. Lol. Has anything about Panerai changed in the intervening years?

At this moment in time if I had to buy a new watch not preowned or vintage then 110% a panerai! Gimme a 312, 392 or a 337

I love the looks of Panerai, but (from my experience after just getting a BNIB 233 and this is my opinion and only my opinion) Rolex has better QC and better finishing, no doubt.

I couldn't give a rat's a$$ about which brand is better perceived or who spends more on marketing. I only care about the end product.

I had planned on getting a 312 for a christmas present to my self this year. This would be my first PAM, but now i'm thinking about a 42mm Explorer 2 instead. I still love the 312, but I think I need another rolex, then on the the world of AP. I have completely fallen for the AP brand...

Depends on if you are talking about the watch or the company? Company then no, they are not in the same bracket, Rolex far bigger and profitable(even PP is not in this league), brand name more valuable too.

But if you are talking about watch itself, then it's more complicated.

I always thought Panerai is more exclusive than Rolex due to their more limited availability nature and the limited and special editions they do. Rolex is definitely more recognizable though and non-watch enthusiasts have always thought rolex is the topmost brand in the watch industry. Price wise, I think they are in the same bracket but they are both targeting different audiences I guess. Panerai is more sporty than Rolex IMHO.

Many people aspire to own a Rolex in a similar way to a luxury car, so believe they are best of the best. Gotta thank the Rolex marketing machine for that, what an amazing job.

Then some become more educated and move up the horological tree, to see what's really up there!

Complications, materials, price, performance, brand, who can really sort it out? Some undeniable greats, but also a bunch of brands that mean nothing.

Much is in the eye of the beholder.

I bought rolex because I really like the quality of the watch. If I liked PAMERAI the I would have got a PAM. I just do not like the flave a flave look of the PAM. It may work for some people.

I have had my sub for 35 years and I doubt a PAM could out live it.

you could make an argument for any watch like that. I love the way the IWC top gun looks but I would never pay $12,000 for something I know is not to the level of quality rolex has.

Wow, this is a thread that can bring out the emotions in people. I have owned multiple rolexes and multiple panerai's. I still believe the most important aspect of any watch is how it makes you feel when you put it on your wrist. I can honestly say I have felt the same level of excitement in wearing my panerai as I have with my rolexes. Each watch is special to me in its own way and can illicit the same big smile when I glance at my wrist. My sub c is a classic that I cherish and my new Pam 422 is just so retro cool that I can't wait to put it on. Is one in a different bracket than the other? Maybe, but aren't there more important things to concern ourselves with. Enjoy what makes you happy!!! Just my two cents.

I am 51 years of age and have owned 8-10 BNIB Rolex over the years. I wore Rolex exclusively since my late twenties. The SS/PLT YM and GMTIIC stand out in my mind as two exceptional ones I have owned. They are great watches, well made and hold their value very well. I never had a mechanical problem with any Rolex, ever.

I reached a point where I care far less about what others think, about impressing others, and far more about what I enjoy for myself. The Panerai line caught my eye and I bought an 88 (sold) then the 422.

My gut instinct tells me that general quality control across the line is better with Rolex. Repair turn-around times are better with Rolex. Panerai has the edge on style IMHO as Rolex is still selling pieces that have not changed much in 60 years. All said... I don't give a rat's ass. I wear what I LIKE, FOR ME and thus comparisons are irrelevant and a waste of energy and ironically, time.

Rock on to those in the Rolex camp. Rock on to those in the Panerai camp. Bravo to those open-minded folk who enjoy both. To those who simply don't understand that it's not about inane, petty comparisons but rather being comfortable in one's own skin, well one day hopefully you will "get it".

Last word in this rant... I get more compliments on my 422 than all the Rolex I have ever owned combined. Peace.

having both brands.... panerai should STOP using ETA movements on their base models.

coz all current Rolex watches uses IN-house movements even the cheapest models, & Rolex sister company TUDOR (uses ETA movements @ cheaper price)

Love both Brands but for now i wont buy a Pam with ETA movement, just me though

cheers

Most people have never even heard of a Panerai. There are ten other brands I'd look at first.

Patek, ALS, AP, Glashutte Original, IWC, Omega, Jaeger Le Coultre, Nomos, Omega, Zenith. IMO, of course.

Makes sense. Nomos is so well known and flying off the shelves.

and would that be a 50k Patek or a 6k omega? it's ok to hate Panerai it really is. I wear one proudly and frankly can afford any watch on your list.

Hey he asked the question, right?

1. Nomos flying off the shelves or not? So what?

2. You can afford any watch off my list? So what? That's supposed to make me impressed or like Panerai? You posing? Please.

Glad you like Panerai. I'm not a fan. Free country.

Any reason Omega is listed twice?
Nomos, Zenith, Omega. No thanks.

You're right. LOL. I'd add Breguet in there then. Maybe I put Omega in there twice because I can only afford Omega and can't pose with the big boys! thanks

Same price bracket...sure..I don't think the brands are close in terms of accomplishment

Also I don't see how some one can say the prefer Panerai to Rolex bc Rolex has older/ out dated designs...

Aren't all PAMs pretty much re-hashes of watches from decades ago? I mean a minuscule font tweak doesn't exactly = fresh and modern design..

That said I love and have/ had both in my collection...
