My Daytona C quest has come to an end!

......But not in the way you might have expected.

Like many of you, I had money put aside for a "some day" Daytona C purchase. I had assumed that a few years after release, even if I still could not get a new Daytona from an AD, that either used or gray market ones would be available. And by available, I mean something less that the $18-20K USD market prices we still see today.

Given the well known market conditions related to Rolex sports models in UPM (Ultra Precious Metal, i.e. 904L Stainless Steel), I took a step back, accepted the fact that Daytona ownership was going to be "unlikely", and began researching other options. A sense of liberation followed....

As a result, I've recently purchased the following, still spending far less than what a "need it today" Daytona would cost:

For a chronograph, I picked up a new Zenith Defy El Primero 21 chrono. A wonderful execution in Titanium, on leather, and just a wonderful piece. I bought this from a non Rolex AD, who handles Zenith, IWC, Grand Seiko,Tudor etc.

For a GMT, though I own a 16713, I reserved the new Tudor GMT. Expect a summer delivery. Same AD as I used for the Zenith.

Finally, I picked up a new Explorer 1 from a local Rolex AD. I've always thought of the Exp 1 as under appreciated, and wonderful, slightly more flexible, alternative or complement to, the no date Sub. I've been wearing this Exp 1 more than my Hulk! ( The Exp 1 purchase gave me some insight into how AD's seem to be adapting to the current market conditions; it was interesting to see how they, very politely, worked to qualify me either as a flipper or true buyer!...a long story that I'll share in another post).

So I no longer grumble and complain about the unfairness of the system re: the Daytona and have liberated myself from that self induced "depression"

Plus, I have money left over!

What if you have an opportunity to buy a Daytona? Will you do it?

I have no idea; I assume that they were just being extra careful, if that's the right phrase, on all their SS sports models. The sales rep was nice about it; I was not offended at all. As a matter of fact, I was there on a weekday afternoon, so the store wasn't busy and we got to talk watches for a good while.
I was wearing a Hulk at the time, and he did mention that he hadn't seen one in over a year.

Coming to the same conclusion. A little turned off the brand by the whole process actually
Congrats on the new pieces

I notice you're in Dallas. Did you happen to buy your Zenith from Timeless Luxury Watches in Frisco? They're the most well-known seller I know of in Dallas that is an AD for all of the brands you listed.

Congrats on the purchases! Please show us pictures. I really love what Zenith is doing with the Defy line. They are great looking watches and the Defy El Primero looks completely awesome. Would love to see some wrist shots.

I would have forked the money over and bought the watch that I really wanted. But that's just me.

Congrats on your new additions!

I still think what we do with our watches is of no concern to a Rolex AD, as if we need to pass a test to be allowed to own a Rolex watch. A terrible time in history to be a Rolex fan...

Congrats on all the new incomings! I've somewhat given up on the Daytona as well and have begun to focus on other pieces. I'll admit, it does feel good.

Yes...a great place, BTW. Their moving their location this summer and have picked up Lange!

Just a great group of watch loving folks! They hosted a blood drive a few weeks back. I got a nice Zenith ball cap and a bag other goodies for my quart of blood...

I was labeled a flipper by someone on this forum this week. I found it a bit humorous. I am pretty sure I am not making any money in selling watches.

If you're happy, that's all that matters.

Life is way too short to bear the sort of misery that seems to be commonplace in every other thread on TRF these days.

Would love to see some pics...sounds like a wonderful group of watches.

Daytona is overhyped. Nice watch, but nothing more.

Quick question and I know no one will have the exact answer. Just a survey.

How Long do you think it will be before a C Daytona become reasonably price? (About $13-$15k)

1. 1-2 years
2. 3-4 years
3. It's never going down that way
