I’m guessing when it dropped it may have hit the corner of the sink cabinet or a handle?

Curious what LAWW charges for something like this.

Best of luck, OP. I'm sure it'll turn out great if you do it.

I agree on getting the movement checked out. But to be honest I'd keep the nick in there and tell people a shark tried to bite my hand off but I wrestled it away and all it was able to do was ding my watch a little ;)

I'd have it fixed and keep pictures to be able to show your child when it's handed down. That looks like a brand new LVc, sharp LVc bezel pics.

Good luck and I bet it'll look brand new again with laser welding. Here's damage on my LVc. You can't see it unless loupe is used

That can be repaired with a laser welder, and if done correctly, no one would ever know.

Dude! That is a really nice Nick you got there... If it is being handed down to one of your sons, i would leave it there... It will tell your story!

Actually you may be surprised... It's more valuable with a dent unpolished than it is "welded".

I think if you are going to pass it down your son, this dent will make it ever more meaningful and unique. I would leave it.

As if anyone would be able to tell it was laser welded.

Like what are you even talking about.
If OP were to sell the watch right now they'd point out the damage for a discount, then get the fix done by themselves and sell it for more.

Is this case repairable?

Regarding the laser welding - and just a personal opinion - RSC doesn’t do it, right? Ever wonder why, aside from motivation to sell more service midcases?

Thoughts on non-Rolex repair:
The weld material available for an indie‘s machine will not be composed in the same elemental proportions of the original 904L and may not polish out exactly to same luster. That is why Rolex chose it almost 30 years ago compared to the 300 series SS being used before that.

Only under 10x or greater magnification would an expert notice. This won’t matter since your son would be unlikely to sell it.

But it is detectable in a scan:

That 3mm weld dimension is a bigger example than you have but I think you get the point. By 2050 I’d expect a smartphone could yield such a scan using differential refraction (not available yet)

Other considerations - a laser weld can work well at the molecular level but the workmanship in finishing the repair matters most. After you turn it over to the weld expert, it might not come back with finishing that follows the chamfers perfectly. Thus you might trade the ding for a different (and more nagging) problem.

If you don’t weld, that ding can’t be polished without a visible difference in lug dimension compared to the undamaged lug.

So my advice is leave it for now - wait for better future options. If you are fortunate enough to never get another another significant gouge then technology may improve 5-10 years down the road and you can decide again.

Check with your homeowners if a repair is abnormal you might be able to file a claim and replace it.

I will quote my wife......if anyone else but you ever notices that, they are way too close.

Edit: Also agree with others, is an oddly attractive ding.
Looks almost like it was meant to be there.

Faired better than my tag hitting the tile floor. Broke the dial post (s). Dial would spin if I shook my wrist.

Rolex dial feet rarely break during a fall due to the way the movement/dial is screwed into the case, there is no play like you often find in other watches.

904L is not "Unobtanium" and I would imagine LAWW laser welds the damage with the same 904L.

Rolex SS is proprietary. So the weld won't and can't match the original steel which means that it won't polish exactly the same way, reflect the same way and when the light hit, the refraction/scattering won't be the same either.

The story goes: You were in a local bar in Mexico. Some local drunk decided to hit on your wife/GF. You told him to take a hike so he stumbled off muttering what you could assume was some obscenities in Spanish. Ten minutes later the guy came back in with two of his buddies and a machete. While yelling something at you (again in Spanish) he took a swing with the machete. Instinctively you put up your arm to block the blade that was coming at your head. The blade hit the watch and "TWANG". All three of the drunks just stared at you... you smiled... they muttered something about "el diablo" and backed out of the bar.

...the day your Rolex saved your life. lol
