PP 5065 Auction Result
This rather tatty 5065 sold for £30,000 (including commission) overnight at Sotheby's. What am I missing?

Probably an extension of the SS Patek sports watch madness we have been seeing over the past couple of years.

Always odd results at auction. I don't follow PP at auction closely but I do follow other brands closely. Plenty of example of regular production pieces that are not particularly scarce going well above retail.
From my experience as a bidder no KYC / AML is completed by the auction houses. Seems like a great way to wash some bad cash and so my only explanation for some of these crazy prices is exactly that. It maybe a stretch, I say it half jokingly. |

Sometimes I think people who buy watches at auction are on crack. Except Roger lol nice deal on that split.

I hope Patek collector desirability ends up like Rolex. There seems to be more love for the older smaller sports stuff in the Rolex lineage vs Patek.
I think this 5065 is cool though I am leaning towards someone overpaying for this one... but considering what smaller Rolex watches like the 1019 go for nothing surprised me these days. |

I don't know what exactly this means, but I think I figured it out:
The movement in this one is a cal. 315/190, much like this one, which also went for well above the estimate: http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/.../lot.2020.html I thought I read that the majority of 5065 models were fitted with the 315/290, so perhaps the "190" version is rarer? Again, not sure what this might mean... |
