New 39mm Oyster Perpetual

I've always liked the 36mm Oyster Perpetual, a nice, discreet, versatile time piece, especially with the silver dial and 3-6-9 numerals.

Perhaps I don't know enough about the new 39mm model, but it strikes me as not much more than an Explorer with a choice of dials.

Am I missing something?

Of course not.

It was the lowly Oyster Perpetual that went to the top of Everest with Hillary and Tenzing and the Explorer was basically an Oyster Perpetual that was spiffed up as a tribute to that accomplishment.

Some people think that it was the Explorer as we know it today that was used by the mountaineering teams, but it was actually the OP.

It is a dressier watch, and won't have the clasp lock like all sport Rolex (including the EXP I)

IMHO it is one of the most perfect watches I have ever seen in the dress category. I hope to get one with the grey dial!

Is it confirmed that the cases are identical (not just diameter)?

Clasps and hands are different.

Otherwise, movement and crown are the same.

I tried the new OP on yesterday at the Basel 2015 Rolex preview in Miami.
I held it next to the Explorer I which I have been considering as my next purchase.

Yes, the cases are identical. The clasp on the new OP does not have the oysterlock or easylink like the explorer.

The blue and silver dials are gorgeous, but I felt that the overall look of the Explorer's dial was nicer. I think it's the way that the 3 6 & 9 numerals on the Explorer shined and stood out. However, most of my watches have black dials, so the blue or silver OP 39mm are serious contenders.

The Explorer I is a sportier watch which can be dressy, and the new OP 39mm are dressier watches which can be dressed down.

Now if only they made the Explorer I with a blue or silver dial.......

What's the clasp like on the 39mm OP? Rolex simply says "folding Oyster clasp" on their website. Good? Or rubbish?

No it's a good clasp. It's the same style as all other oyster bracelets but without any of the additional things such as the lock or extension mechanisms (easylink, glidelock)

not "rubbish", but no easy means by which to adjust. even the DJ has 5 mm of "easylink" adjustibility.

kind of a lame way for rolex to differentiate the OP, if you ask me.

So I'm guessing it's still a case of using a tooth pick to alter the adjustment at the clasp?

Jack, I don't think you're missing anything. As others have said, pretty much the same watch with different hands and clasp.

doubtful. the clasp doesn't have holds along the side like the old ones, so, one will need a tool of some sort.

I wouldn't care so much about the lack of the easylink or glidelock, but no lock would be an issue for me. That always bothered me on my old DateJust. Still, the new OP looks really good.

And different price tag I suspect. Also it adds variety for those who like something other than the Explorer logo and black dial. I'm hoping to see expanded dial offerings in the future. The new watches just seem so on target to me.

Yes, the new OP's are $5700. Explorer I is $6550, I believe.

I like the dial colour of the dark grey 2015 OP. BUT, the dial itself is way to busy, and the colourful playfulness (i.e. the coloured squares outside the indexes) in the new model, makes it less elegant IMHO. Thats why I didn't care to wait until this fall, but got the 36 mm OP instead.

1. The 39 mm, 2015 OP dark grey dial:

2. My 36 mm, 2014 OP steel dial:

+1. Those colors are a huge deal breaker. Nonsense if you ask me.

Thanks guys! My 40th birthday is not until this Saturday, but regarding the OP (got it as a 40th birthday present from my wife, two weeks ahead), actually I waited until Basel 2015, and then I went with the one I got in the picture above.
