Tortured logic is leading me to the Platinum Daytona

I'm sure you hardened veterans have seen this a million times - a Rolex newbie trying to talk himself into doing something crazy...

There is nothing rational about wanting a 116506, but here is the twisted logic I have created for myself, after going back and forth for several months now:

1) The watch I spend the most $$$ on should be the one I wear the most. Therefore, a precious metal daily wearer.

2) If it is going to be a daily wearer, then it has to be able to stand up to the abuse. Therefore, a sub/daytona/gmt.

3) If it is going to get scratched up from daily wear, I need to be able to polish it on occasion without having to worry about wearing away the metal. Therefore, platinum. I can appreciate the patina, but then I can polish it back up and appreciate the bling every now and then.

Ergo, must get Platinum Daytona. Oh yeah - and I also think it is a stunner, and I like the heft of it. And I can go back to my BLNR if I ever come to my senses.

How does this sound? Am I missing anything?

oh yeah, I forget to mention. I never would have thought any watch with diamonds would ever work for me. And yet, magically it works on the Platona. I don't know why, but it does. I don't think I could pull off diamonds with any other watch...

When you scratch platinum, the material is still there just pushed to the side. When you polish it, you are "pushing" it back into place.

That's how it was explained to me. In practice, I don't know if you have to do anything differently than when you polish gold.

Here is where you are appearantly wrong. Bas (SearChart) who is a Rolex watchmaker and polishes these things explained just the other day that this is a typical internet myth.

I know we are in a rolex forum , & personally I love rolex & own several , but at this price range for a platinum watch I will go for Patek Philippe 5905P , lovely watch ,2 of the best complications together, annual calendar & chronograph, just my thoughts , but again get what you love , the platinum Daytona is awesome

I'm pretty sure you can still over polish a platona . All this pushing the platinum to the side I'm not sure about. I am guessing for the life of the watch compare to SS ..gold.. you get a few more polish out of the life.
I seem ring and stuff made of platinum you can still see it change shape or the sharpness of the edge . There are also platinum watch you see pre owned that the lugs and stuff are not as sharp as new.

The only diamond dials I like on a man's Rolex are the PM Day Date and the Platona. It is the invisible settings that does it. Other diamond dials look like settings instead of diamonds. It is a beautify watch.

Platinum does not follow the same metallurgy rules than gold for example. Few words about platinum.

Let me explain. Platinum takes more effort to polish, for the simple reason that it does not wear as other precious metals do; consequently, it doesn’t follow the same metallurgical rules. Platinum has a “liquid” surface. Other metals lose mass over time – prongs wear thin, shanks get thinner, decorations such as Florentine or engravings wear down. All of these deterioration take a lot longer with platinum. When you scratch platinum, you really are just moving the metal aside, whereas other precious metals lose surface area. While this is a major advantage in durability and contributes to the strength of platinum, it also makes the polishing process more difficult.

It is noteworthy that Platinum won’t wear away when marked or scuffed. As a result, metal is merely displaced and never lost.

Price is a big difference between platinum and white gold. Platinum cost 2.5 to 5 times more than white gold. Why? Platinum has a higher noble metal percentage in jewelry. Platinum is harder to work with than white gold. The higher melting temperature makes it more difficult to cast. The platinum solders also flow at higher temperatures. These and other reasons make platinum more expensive to work with than white gold.

Platinum will ’scratch’, and only way of avoiding all signs of wear is not to wear Platona at all

And YES, go for the Platona. For me the DD40 Platinum is the king, but i sure do love the Platona I would take it with baquette diamonds and fully blue dial.

Yes, Bas has given a good explanation of this and has a lot of first hand experience with Rolex of polishing platinum. Other than that your reasonings make sense.

I employed some of that logic to come to a similar conclusion. One of the points you hit on that especially made sense to me is the idea of paying so much money for a watch and then wearing and enjoying it every day or at least many days. As much as other watches in this price range offer beautiful movements or fancier finishing (Patek, Lange, etc.), the Daytona is built to be enjoyed every day and both the bracelet and the watch can withstand the rigors of daily wearing. I could never justify a platinum Daytona price tag for a watch that I would only pull out on special occasions.

The diamond dial is really beautiful, albeit perhaps a bit more dressy. This thread needs pictures!
