Finally a decision!

I have been agonising over which Patek to go for and have finally reached a decision! Wow, it's been tough!

I started off wanting a 5726. Then I decided that the 5764 was more realistically within budget. Then I fell completely for the 5990 which blew my mind, and I decided I'd find the money! But then someone mentioned the 5980, and that's even better!!

But...I want my first Patek to be a keeper which means (a) getting one I can afford to keep if things get a little tough, and (b) getting one that suits my small wrists.

So, the 5990 and 5980 are out as they are both probably a touch oversized for my wrists. Some will disagree, and of course I could get away with it (I have an AP Diver!) but my personally view is that whilst tool watches can be oversized, I think sports watches should match wrist and general physique size.

I love the 5726 and the idea of the annual calendar is appealing.

But...the 5712 has suddenly come from nowhere to win the race!!

I'm not sure whether it will be the Steel or the White Gold, it will come down to price/availability as I like them both equally. The steel probably appeals more as I can always get a good quality custom strap made if I want to mix it up a bit.

It's going to mean having to sell some watches which is a shame, but so be it. Can't have everything!

My current collection is:

NOT FOR SALE
- Daytona 116509LN
- Sea Dweller 116600
- Omega Speedmaster Reduced
- TAG Microtimer

WILL BE SOLD
- JLC Reverso GMT

TWO OF THE THREE TO BE SOLD
- Daytona 116500
- Royal Oak 15450 Blue Dial
- Royal Oak Offshore 15710

It's probably the two AP's that will go, but it's going to be with a very heavy heart, particularly the Diver which I've only just bought and really like. Just not sure I can bring myself to sell the Daytona.

Great choice! I strongly recommend the 5712/1a.

love your final choice. wearing mine today!
re: the pieces to be sold, i know it's on ur "not for sale" list, but would u reconsider letting go of the 116509LN, but keep the 116500? that, along with the JLC and the RO diver i think would help fund the 5712.

i think it would be a mistake to get rid of the 15450 blue...at least before the 5712. wait until the nautilus arrives...and then if u feel it overlaps with the 15450, u know it will sell quickly (i've seen a lot of posts on the forum inquiring about its availability).

but i think u gotta have a royal oak in the collection...u just gotta!

You make a good point re: the Royal Oak - but I have recently given my silver dial 15450 to my wife so we are keeping one in the family no matter what

Of the 3 I'd choose the 116500 and AP Diver to go. That's largely in part because you have the WG Oysterflex Daytona already and I would rather have a Royal Oak plus that.

Do you already have a connection to get the 5712 at retail? If not, that's going to be a long wait, or huge money over list such that the 5990/1A seems like a much better deal.

The diver is a great watch.

Good luck with your 5712 hunt. IMHO you made the correct choices on which watches to sell.

Yeah, both APs. Daytona’s are too good. 5712 is perfect for small wristers like myself

Thunderbirds are go on the 5712!

I'd keep one of the APs, don't think you need two Daytonas.

I’d let the diver and 116500 go since you’re keeping the 509. Good luck on your hunt

FFS, Vince, catch a grip! The 116500 is a dime a dozen, and you’re going to ditch practically the only decent watch in your collection?
With the 15450 being an obvious choice to let go in the face of redundancy by the 5712, that’s straight forward – but you’d be absolutely daft as a brush to toss the 15710 onto the scrap heap.

Let’s agree that you’ve just had a momentary brain fart, and sanity has now returned.

Great choice, the 5712 steel is awesome, but forget changing the bracelet to strap, that is impossible

Do not consider the 5712G. The dial is very blah IMO and a Naut belongs on a bracelet. I would wait as long as it takes as it will be worth it.

cant go wrong with the 5712. Wonderful watch and the dial is very different than anything else you are likely to encounter.

Thanks guys, all good advice as ever.

In terms of which watches to sell, very tough choice. The 15450 is great but my wife now has one and mine has had very little wrist time recently. This was originally first in my list to go. But, I'm loathed to not have an AP in my collection.

Obviously, if I keep the Diver then that's the AP box ticked. And of the three contenders, the Diver is my favourite watch by a long way, it is different gravy!! But, for someone with a small wrist who is in the depths of middle age, its use is limited to very specific outfits and occasions due to its heft. So, it gets worn rarely.

And then there is the SS Daytona. Yes it could be seen as having been replaced by the white gold Daytona, but given that one is on rubber and one metal, and given the huge difference in dials, they really are like two different watches. And the SS Daytona has been my most worn watch. It's going to be almost impossible for me to let this one go. But, with the Sea Dweller, and the BLRO on order, do I really want three SS Rolex and no AP.

Going to be tough, but will get there!!

Hi Vince. I’m going through similar deliberations myself. Just interested why you decided 5712 vs 5726? Have you seen them both in the flesh? Just curious. I would keep the 116500,,,great size on your wrist and it will always be an iconic piece IMO.

Hi Andy

To be honest, decision was two-fold. Firstly, the 5726 is more of a stretch financially and I don't believe in stretching myself for watches. I'd probably have to sell three rather than two to get the 5726. Secondly, as much as I think I prefer the balance and look of the 5726, the slight quirkiness of the 5712 dial layout makes it more interesting, which is weird given that the imbalance of the dial is why I didn't consider it initially!

Think I agree re: the Daytona.

go with the 5712 on bracelet. You wont regret it. It may suck selling a couple of the APs or rolex's but worth it. I'd contemplate selling an organ before ditching my 5712 if ever in a pinch

Try on the 5980. It's not big. Just a bit thicker than 5712 but nicely substantial on the wrist. The 5712 is also beautiful if you can get one without overpaying. Cheers.
