DJ: Jubilee/Smooth vs Oyster/Fluted

I have always been a fan of the good old 36mm DJ. But for some reason I don't like as much the more "traditional" combinations of jubilee bracelet/fluted bezel and oyster bracelet/smooth bezel.

I like the relative novelty of having one or the other, but can't decide which I like more. What do you guys think?

I just had mine fixed up by RSC and and chose to replace my bracelet with an Oyster bracelet. I really like it. I had the dial replaced with a blue one as well. This is the engine turned bezel but it’s similar to the fluted that is offered now

I'd have to agree, the fluted bezel is a thing of beauty and although I personally love the Jubilee bracelet I don't think it goes as well with the smooth bezel.

I love the Fluted + Jubilee combo but the Fluted + Oyster looks fantastic as well. Someone at my office just got a 36mm DJ with the white dial (roulette date wheel), fluted bezel, and oyster bracelet. The watch looks stunning.

Love the fluted and jubilee. But I also have an oyster band from my GMT I can swap in on the DJ 41.

Most folks on here prefer fluted with jubilee and smooth with Oyster. However, I think the oyster bracelet with fluted bezel is the bee's knees.

Fluted + Oyster.

The fluted bezel dresses the watch up when you want it to be.

The oyster makes it sporty for when you don't.

That would be my combination.

unless the dj is your only good watch and you want to think hard on the combination to make it look both dressy and "sporty" (it is not frankly, regardless how hard people are trying to convince themselves or others, dj is not sporty. period.), the traditional oyster/smooth or jubilee/fluted can't go wrong.

But the bottom line is still buy the one you like the most. No one else cares the combination you wear and the impact to the resale $ difference is negligible

My honest opinion in order from favorite to least favorite:

1. Fluted/jubilee (the classic)
2. Smooth/jubilee (more understated)
3. Fluted/oyster (only DJ2 config I like)
4. Smooth/oyster (OK, but too far from the original DJ design)

I'm contemplating fluted with jubilee for my first DJ.

As owner of DJ36 fluted jubilee, if I had to change one I would keep the jubilee without thinking it twice. I have the oyster in my Exp and it is not as comfortable with big difference to me, also the added weight of the watch is very noticeable to me.

I got the fluted, jubilee with rhodium dial and sticks. I couldn’t be happier. Less visible scratches w/jubilee vs oyster and though the jub/fluted has been called out as the dressier option, I’ve found that it looks better with more casual clothing like chinos, poplin w/rolled sleeves and some Bally’s. Oddly enough, my “sports” watch, a SpeedyPro, looks better with my suits.

Jub + jub. Or smooth with oyester.
My personal money, don’t see the point in buying a DJ other than jubilee+jubilee. There are Other sportier lower bling models. To each their one tho.

I can’t imagine my watch not looking like this

The new dial Rolex put in, was it the same as the dial originally available dials for your watch reference when it was new?

Yes. It was a dial available when the watch was made in the 80’s.

WOW! So Rolex still have dials go back to then or they can make them. I am so impressed, kudos to Rolex.

So your watch is still original and you have original bracelet if it is ever needed.

Even if it was a service dial not original it would still be a cool Rolex. Who cares if not 100 per cent original to reference it would still be 100% Rolex.

However, 30 years on your watch IS original to reference, that is a great bonus.

Awesome watch enjoy in good health.

Each to his his own but Fluted + Jubilee is classic and gorgeous. I reckon the Oyster will be a scratch magnet from hell

The DJ41 lug width is 21mm. I don't think it will fit anything else. The GMT lug width is 20mm. So the 20mm Osyter may fit on the DJ but it would be 1mm narrow and I assume the end links aren't compatible either. It would be nice if they could be swapped. But I don't think it will work.

I agree the Fluted and Jubilee is the combo considered the most classic, but that was on the 36mm DJ. The DJ41 is larger and that combo is really flashy. The fluted with the Oyster and PCL looks better to me. But it is the one thing that still has me thinking about which model I'll get. Maybe it is the lighting in the AD that makes the Fluted/Jub over powering to me.
