This is really not good, not good, I’m already craving another watch

I absolutely love my new sub-date, the honeymoon has just begun and I’m all about sport watches – my favorite Rolex watches are the GMT’s, Subs, Daytona’s. I’m not as familiar with the terminology of the GMT’s that are used on this board “BLMR?” but I would love to someday add the red/blue or blue/black steel watch to my collection. With that being said, I have this sudden urge to own a dress watch. Every man needs at least 1 sport watch and 1 dressy watch, right? Before I purchased my sub-date, I said to myself, this is an expensive purchase and it will be your only Rolex for at least 3-5 years, but those feelings have since changed. I don’t know why but they have. So I called up the AD and asked him to put me on the list for a stainless steel Sky Dwellar with a white dial. I think it offsets the black faced dial of my sub and would make a perfect pair of sport/dress watches. Any other dressier watches you can recommended that isn’t going to completed empty my bank account? I’m still fairly new to the Rolex watch world. Thanks Gents

If you want a dress watch then look at a Cellini as the SkyDweller isn’t a dress watch. It is a great watch though and absolutely love mine!

Does it have to be a Rolex? As above, sky dweller is not a dress watch but very nice all the same.

If it’s really white that takes your fancy rather than a dress watch take a look at the polar exp 2. Great watch at a reasonable price comparatively and generally available somewhere.

If a dress watch and has to be Rolex, an older date just on leather works well. Failing that, omega and nomos do some nice watches which might fit the brief.

Maybe I should rephrase that, not necessarily a dress watch (I don't like the Cellini at all) but not a sport watch either? what category would a Sky Dweller and Date Just fall under? Thanks

Questions to ask: Does it have to be a Rolex? Do you want a bracelet (instead of a strap)?

If answers are "yes" to both, then how about a Milgauss?

I get what you're feeling and have been there many times. My suggestion would be to slow down/fight that urge and enjoy what you got. Then pick carefully/do your research meanwhile for that next watch.

Sky dweller is a very good choice. Maybe look at the Datejust models (excellent watches for the money). I do agree with sensui; take your time and try on different models and do some research before buying right away. Good luck and keep us informed.

Regarding a dress watch, i love my Datejust 41. It's at home with almost any attire i have on (including formal stuff). Maybe check one of those out?

Also as others have stated, there are other brands that make phenomenal dress watches. JLC comes to mind.

A dressier sport watch in the Rolex family would be the DJ range. Lots of variety with many dials to choose from.

Milgauss isn’t anymore a dress watch than the sub is.

I love the DJ41 white dial. So clean looking and not 100% sport like a sub. I was in your same boat. Said I would buy a Rolex and be done for awhile. Ended up flipping the first one and buying two others in a month. Lost some money on first, but having two Rolex's to switch it up makes then even more enjoyable at least to me. If money was no object I would already have a third or fourth Rolex already. Very addicting hobby and not cheap on the bank account. I now plan to try and add a piece once a year as a present to myself.

Your GMT, Sub, and Daytona can be a dress watch. There is no such code.

The lettering (i.e. BLNR) refers to the specific portion of the reference number that denotes color combination.

GMTs:
116710LN - Black Bezel
116710BLNR - Black/Blue Bezel
126710CHNR - Brown/Black Bezel, Two Tone Rose Gold
126710BLRO - SS Pepsi Bezel (Blue/Red)

etc.

Dress watch is usually on a leather strap, could be something like a Cartier Tank but i have a soft spot for an IWC pilots watch

That's a beautiful watch, love it. Do they make it in a fluted bezel?

They do!! I believe blue as well as grey dials. Maybe white too. I'm drawing a blank as to whether they do have mine with fluted.

Thanks for the kind words man!

If you want a dress watch, I'd consider adding a time-only leather-band piece to your collection. Perhaps take a look at an ALS Saxonia or PP Calatrava?

You can definitely score a nice Datejust. Check out the Rolex website. Technically speaking, a datejust isn’t a pure dress watch either, but I’d be ok with wearing one with a suit. I actually a wear a Sub with a suit.

They absolutely do.

You can go smooth bezel/jubilee, like the photo you're referring to, or fluted/jubilee. Or...fluted/oyster or smooth/oyster.

It's a great watch and won't break the bank, especially if you go smooth bezel. The fluted is going to be about 2k more.

I agree, try to be patient and take your time, I just started collecting in a new hobby and I've already bumped up my spending limit a few times and instead of buying once a fortnight as was the plan, even when my budget was lower, I now feel the urge to buy more often and at higher prices. Take a breath and be cool, both of us.
