Patek 5235

Curious for owners of a 5235 how do they like it compared to a more traditional annual calendar like the 5205. I’m missing an annual calendar in my collection but also eyeing a Lange 1 so don’t know if the dial on a Lange hews too much to the 5235 but would appreciate any thoughts!

I had the 5235G for awhile and liked it. I’ve since moved it on for other pieces. I had a 5726a and now just picked up a 5960 1a so love annual calendars. I’d go 5205g over 5235 if went back in time.

I am biased as I own a 5235G but I do think it’s the more special watch between the two. There’s no equal in Patek’s line-up in terms of complication, movement and case (5236 is similar but at a much higher price point). Perhaps rarer as well. I do LOVE the 5205 as well. The lugs are brilliant and the dial easier on the eyes that of the 5235. Movement much more pedestrian without any of the Advanced Research tech of the 5235. In a larger Patek collection i’d go 5235, in a smaller collection a 5205 is the more consensual piece.

Never seen the 35 but looks cool/ different.
I can tell you, it’s no fun to sell a 5205…
I currently have a grand Lange 1 moon and it’s a nice watch. I’d prob have that out of the three choices.

It’s Lange 1 all day every day for me. I owned a 5205g but sold it as I find it chunky. 5235 is a bit quirky but not as quirky as the Lange 1.

I always thought any regulator looks better without a date or AC. The design comes from an era where such things were unheard of and also, dates, etc. make the watch look busy.

I absolutely love the 5235 rose gold (and own it). Nothing quite like it in the Patek catalogue and IMO a highly underappreciated watch. It's time of glory at auctions will come, no doubt about it.

I have a 5235G and I agree with ChetBaker - the movement is really special. I think that is what drew me to it most of all. Yes, 5205 is easier on the eyes. But to me, if you’re eyeballing a Lange 1, you might be more drawn to non-traditional dials.

I would say it depends on what other watches you have in your collection. The 5235 is a nice complication with the regulator and AC. It is a nice addition if you already have several Pateks as it is like no other Patek watch. However if you are looking to get your first Patek, one of the non-regulator AC may be a better choice.

I have had my 5235G for quite a while. At that time, Patek was producing the regulator at very low volume due to production issues and auctions prices were way above retail price. However market caught up with demand, so it should he more readily available at a reasonable price.

I have a 5110 already and have been eyeing a YG Lange 1 as well. Also considering a 5212 to add something more whimsical to the collection.

The 5110 is a very nice watch. Both the 5205 and 5235 will wear a bit larger than your 5110. If you get a chance to try on either of these AC, try to do so as it gives you a real feel for how it wears.

Lange makes some very nice watches. Aesthetically they are quite different from Patek and many people like it, but many do not.

Best of luck in your next watch acquisition

I have the 5235 and also 5396 and the biggest difference is the height of the case 10mm vs. 11.2mm. 1 odd mm may sound small but I feel the 5235 wears a lot better.

5205 is even thicker according to Patek website and I have handled it and it feels too thick.

That's good to know on thickness. I've tried on the 5235 and it wore well for me but haven't tried on a 5205. I have 6 in wrists so I usually draw the line right at 40mm watches but the 5235 didn't seem too big when I tried it on.

Go for the 5235 - again it's an absolutely amazing watch, best one Patek makes under 60k.

Is a very unique watch and is the one and only regulator in the entire Patek range! Love it. Is very underrated but this is what draws me to it. And have a look at the back, it’s simply gorgeous! The rose gold makes brushed black dial looks exceptionally lovely. My advice - get the deployant clasps. You will not regret it….

Was able to try on the watches and really liked how the 5235 wore. 40mm is usually my ceiling for watches but didn’t feel it was too big at all. 5205 wore a bit thick but also was able to see a 5212 which was beautiful in person.

Love the 5212 as well. But at nearly the same price the heft, case and movement of the 5235 would just narrowly give it the edge to me.

How does it wear long term? It was much thinner than I expected which I really liked which is usually the problem for me with smaller wrists?

It's a great watch for so many reasons. It's a great 'suit and tie' watch, fits under the sleeve comfortably. I do not find it hard to read the time as I have seen others mention. The dial has great texture. And, grey and blue goes with just about everything. It's priced reasonably on the secondary market. Lastly, it's not 'too thin' it's actually proportioned perfectly.
