Crossing the busy plaza, watch stolen of wrist...

Hey guys,

Imagine these three scenarios;

A. You're strolling across one of the busy plazas in Rome with your girl in one arm and the watch on the other..

B. You're walking back to the hotel in downtown Bangkok after a good night out..

C. You've been traveling around Kenya and now exploring Nairobi...

..when suddenly your watch is stolen off your wrist. Basically, it could happen anywhere.

Either way, which of these watches (/or brands) do you think is more likely to be recognised and stolen off your wrist? Rolex (GMT/SUB) or Patek (nautilus/aquanaut)?

No one is going to steal a Nautilus off your wrist without you realizing.

Let's see, one of the most recognizable luxury brands in the world vs a haute horological watch brand. Not sure if serious

at least. If you asked 100 every day people 'have you heard of Rolex?', it would easily be over 90%. Ask the same question for Patek and you'd be LUCKY to get more than 1 or 2. people could care less about Patek outside of watch circles or if you have a ton of money to spend. this is a VERY small population at the end of the day.

Okay - 11 votes in, 10 for rolex. Would you then say it is "safer" to travel with your Patek than your Rolex?

Your question is phrased a certain way......'which is more likely to be recognized and stolen'. This is Rolex by a long shot.

However, you have a lot of thieves who are just stealing to steal, don't even look at the brand. That is when you have equal risk for both watches and brand doesn't matter. In this situation neither is 'more safe'.

For Nairobi, read as wrist chopped off to get the watch.
This is an unfortunate fact of life.
That's why I never visited family in Nairobi.
Anyway, thugs are not usually intelligent.
If they were, they'd spend time leaning about brands and target PP in preference to R.
However in reality, R all the way.
Damn, this was a post I wish I never came across.

Rome and Bangkok are relatively safe cities in terms of violent crimes, although thefts can happen anywhere. I have felt safe wearing my Aquanaut in both of these cities. I would wear a Rolex in these cities as well. IMO Rome and Bangkok are not any different from NYC.

Although I have never walked through the city of Nairobi, I was wearing my Aquanaut while transiting through Nairobi airport and I felt completely safe.

I wear my aquanaut 5167 all the time with short sleeves...riding on subways, etc. No one has ever noticed it. A 40MM Rolex is a totally different story.

You must be joking. Rome is used to be one of the most thief-friendly cities in our planet. Next episode will have been released in Istanbul.

Not going to speculate on Hypothetical questions like this.

Wear my watches Any of them, All of the time, Everywhere! I don't think I'm going to get jumped for my watch as I live my life. I'm aware of my surroundings but not about worrying.

Theft can happen anywhere in the world. Thieves target the vulnerable in any city. If you let your guards down after having a few drinks late at night, you are going to be an easier target than a businessperson who stays within the business district and travels in chauffeur-driven vehicles.

I agree with Istanbul though. It is a beautiful city with a rich history going back to the Roman Empire days. However I was careful not to be out late at night in Istanbul.

IMO Rome is safer than most major US cities. But other people's experiences and perceptions may be quite different.

I would probably get my insurance valuation on the basis of used replacement cost vs new replacement cost and insure it for that value. Used replacement cost is usually a lower value but not in this case. Plus its not like you can just call up your AD to get a new one.

I think stolen pateks are popping up at factory service more likely than Rolexes.

Yeah, Rome, Amsterdam (had left my car 5 minutes to go drink a tea on the other side of the road, this guy comes and takes out a flat metal thing to open cars, stepped out and yelled "get the F... outta here") Paris also is a thief's paradise, don't know about the US, but Europe is doomed man....

'europe is doomed' because there's theft in 3 of the most well visited/known cities in Europe (not to mention 2 of them have 2million+ actual inhabitants on top of everything? can't tell if you're actually serious that's the equivalent of saying the US is 'doomed' because you know of an occurrence of somebody getting carjacked in Los Angeles
