We had a Havanese we loved dearly! One of the greatest breeds for families with children. He was tough, hypoallergenic and very smart. About 15 lbs full grown.

Our whole family to this day misses our Georgio.

Lots of advice being offered on various breeds. And I get the concept of wanting a dog that suits your style/family. But if you are in the market for a new puppy, at least go to a local animal shelter and see if any of the puppies there look like they might be a suitable candidate for the newest member of your family.

I think we just adopted a diabetic dog. We know it's diabetic, we know we're fostering it. The last dog we fostered, we had for 14 years. That's called adoption, right?

Here's an update on the puppy.

We ended up passing on the puppies that were for sale by a breeder in the East Bay. After a member reached out to me with some amazing advice, it gave me a chance to pause and think it through a little more carefully. After some research on the local breeder she was a fly-by-night breeder and choosing a pup based on a photo and paying via PayPal just didn't seem like the right approach. This pup will be a part of our family for many, many years... I was simply rushing it.

I ended up finding a breeder in the North Bay (Skansen Kennel) who has been breeding Schnauzers for decades and is very reputable. She breeds Giants, Standards and Miniatures.

After checking her web page I saw that she had 2 recent miniature litters, one on Nov 29th, and one on Nov 30th. I sent her an email, called and left a voicemail, and submitted an inquiry through the website. My first thought was this litter is already called for but after 3-days of waiting, someone who works for her called and said they have 4 males, 1 black, 1 salt and pepper, and 2 white.

I put a deposit down for the black male mini and will have 1st pick for the others if temperament or something else raises any red flags. But I have a feeling this black mini will be amazing. And she has such an incredible reputation I'm not too concerned. He'll be uncropped we'll have to wait 10-weeks to pick him up. So sometime in mid-February we'll be able to pick him up. Yay!!

I'm expecting to get paperwork from her this week and will surprise my son on Christmas day by putting a leash into his stocking and showing him the paperwork on the pup that he already imagines being named Nick. lol

I think that's a great name. Now my wife and I are trying to figure out all the other stuff... when we bring him home and what we need to do to make his upbringing the best it can be and I'm being honest here... I'm nervous as hell!!!

I'll continue to update and thanks again everyone for all your amazing input and advice. Merry Christmas.

Skansen. If you’ve ever heard of schnauzers you’ve heard of Skansen. Sylvia is a legend. Congratulations

That's great to hear and Sylvia has been amazing. Couldn't be happier and we're so excited. My son thinks we decided to wait until next year and he's going to really flip out!

Voted Terrier. We bought a new dog last year. Did a bunch of research. In the end I wanted a Golden Retriever and my wife wanted a Australian Shepherd. LOL, we got an Aussie...who joined our aging long haired Dachshund. The Aussie is a great dog, probably the most loving dog I have ever had. The DNA is strong though, she wants to herd the poor Dachsund all the time.... We love our dogs like our children.

We have rescued dogs and bought papered/registered dogs. It seems to me that pets will conform to their environment and owners. Maybe we have been lucky, but even the rescue animals have been really good pets.

One thing I noticed while doing research. The breeder seems to play a more important role than I would have expected. I found dog forums with reviews on breeders and some scary stories about the way some breeders treat the pups. I took me some time to find the right breeder for the Aussie.
Good luck.

OOPs missed the update. Nevermind and congratulations.

Congratulations.
I'm sure you'll be very happy.
All I have to offer is to always always always buy quality dog food. I know it's a hot topic and everyone has their own stories and advice but I firmly believe that high quality food makes a big difference in your dog's longevity.
Personally I feed my dog only Taste of the Wild, if that helps. I'm sure others have their recommendations but after research that is mine.
Again congratulations. A good dog adds so much to a home.

I third this.

My Golden Retriever is going on year 14 soon and just got her bloodwork back. Everything was registered within the normal ranges.

My other advice is, don't over exercise or overwork the dog in their early years. I know at the time they can take the exercise, but as they get older, the arthritic hips come on earlier compared to dogs that had their weight controlled by food and slower paced walks. Once the hips start going, you can only slow it down...

Congrats on the new upcoming puppy. You have already picked your breed but for anyone look for a dog that is hypo allergic and small there is nothing better than a Brussels Griffon. Extremely loving dogs with hilarious personalities. We have a 17 year old female Brussels and just got two female Brussels Puppies (litter mates) in February. Amazing dogs!

It’s almost time and we are so excited to pick up Nick next Saturday. On Christmas morning I put a dog tag and collar in my son’s stocking and he was so happy and has been counting down. Today I’m taking my son to Petco to get some pet supplies and have Orijen dog food (thank you for recommending guys) and snacks on order. I will need to mix the dry with raw beef and carrots. Sylvia has provided an incredible amount of literature and although absolutely overwhelming we feel more prepared. A big thank you to all of you for contributing to this new chapter. I’ll be sure to post some pics!!
