what causes stiffness whilst setting the time
whilst setting the time and turning the crown I find as the hands rotate around the dial that there is a stiffness almost a resistance at some points of the dial.
this question has been asked before but for the life of me I cant remember the reason as to why this happens, any explanation greatly welcome

It is the friction between the centre pinion and cannon pinion. These two tubes are pressed over each other, the centre pinion (or centre wheel axle in the cal. 15××) gets its power from the gear train and takes the cannon pinion with it (which holds the minute hand at the end).
There is lubrication (Rolex MR4 grease) in between the two parts. When you engage the keyless system into the time-setting position you will independently move the cannon pinion with the centre pinion being motionless. The amount of lubricant has a significant effect on how smooth the setting of the hands is, also a new set of these parts will always make them a little 'stiff'. If it is worn out it is usually super loose and wiggly when setting the time. |
