With the exception of material and size, they appear to be pretty much all the same (to my untrained eye at least). And yet there countless stamp numbers.

This LINK suggests there are at least 59 different EL stamp marks for the 19mm and 20mm lug variants.

And this POST in the Reference Library suggests countless more for the sub-19mm bracelets and lugs.

Q: Is there REALLY any difference between the ELs for a given bracelet and case size? Say, a 280 for an Oyster 9315 vs a 285 for an Oyster 7836.

If so, what is the design variation?

I think you answered your own question :) Size being the major difference.
Gaps between lug tips & the round part of the case vary amongst many models
therefore the depth of the EL's vary.

Also, some take 1.8mm spring bars and others take 2.0mm. That adds another variable to material, size and case dimensions.
