5172G or 5960/01G-worth getting?
Hi everyone. I randomly got an offer from AD to buy a 5172G. The other option would be a 5960/01G which is currently in stock and that I’ve ben eyeing for a while. Are any of these two reasonable to get at msrp? Not looking to flip or make big bucks from hodling but not losing craploads of value as soon as I walk out the door would be nice. Pertinent point here being that I am able to refund the VAT which is 20% of msrp in my country, and currency fluctuations makes it a pretty good deal even when comparing with Swiss msrp (But even such a discount doesn’t make that 5930 sitting in the display since 2017 a good deal, lol)
Which one should I get? 5172G is new and reception seems so-so at best. But I really like it and some controversy at launch isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Very short production run before cancellation due to low interest and covid would be a possibility here, I think. My main concern being if I would get tired of the more flamboyant aspects of it after a while. 5960/01G is a little similar to the 5524G I already have, but I like the aesthetics and it’s got more functions for a lower price. Issue here being that Patek annual calendars seem to be dogs on the secondary market. So if I get this one I can probably forget about value retention. |

5172G for me! It’s super sporty, contemporary and masculine. I think you could dress it up too.
The 5960 has too many colours - blue, white, red, brown. Not my taste. You could change the strap. No idea about value retention. Suppose the key question is if the 5172G will age well and you’ll want to keep it in the collection. It’s very “now” and not as classic as the 5170’s it replaces so maybe not... Good luck in your decision |

I’ll go 5960/01G , but yeah it will tank like the titanic.
5712G will keep price better , I feel that the G version is a lil washed out, plus the maintenance of the bezel. So yeah the only advantage is better price retention. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hm. What do you mean by bezel maintenance? Would the 5172 be expected to take more dings than a 5960 because of the shape? |

Sorry bro I transpose the numbers I thought you were referring to 5712G, but you are saying 5172G; totally different watch. I think horological wise the chrono is probably a better watch. But I like better the 5960/01g even though it will sink badly (retention Price wise) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Both will tank in value as is par for the course. I like the 5172 between the two. Cool watch

I guess the collectability of 5172 in the long run will depend on i its production lifetime and what might replace it. I feel it’s different enough from 5170J/G/P to be considered its own line whereas the 5960 seems way to common to have any chance of becoming a cult item. Even though they did have their ”Omg next big thing” moment for a while there with the /1A versions on steel bracelets.

There’s absolutely no reason why the 5170s and 5172 shouldn’t be more coveted. I guess Patek just prices them too high is what it comes down to. It is what it is. If I was caked enough to buy 80k watches without worrying about the back end I’d grab one in a heartbeat. I know my place lol

By the way, does anyone know what the /01 in 5960/01G stands for? If I understood correctly /1 means metal bracelet but /01? Is it the switch from 16mm deployant clasp to 18mm pilot style buckle that is being noted, or is there something else like a change of lug width, etc?

You should get the one you like and will keep a while. Neither should hold up well in the current second hand market unless you can sell the watch yourself. So that is a non issue or should be. Between the two I would get the 5172.

But you're making a great point this G version about to be discontinued, which will certainly support its resale value. Obviously, I'm biased, but I feel strongly about 5960 being a better release than 5172. I find 5172 a lazy, non-sophisticated, oversized "denim pizza". Sorry for a harsh words on 5172, but it almost made me upset as a Patek collector. Owning 5980A and 5130P (blue dials), it makes me feel like Patek don't take it seriously anymore..Just my 2 cents. Good luck with whatever your choice! |

I like the 5172 quite a lot. The stepped lugs and syringe hands are dreamy, plus the blue calf strap is casual enough for daily wear. You could get a croc strap to dress it up. I’m tempted by it as well but worry about value retention. I’ll probably wait a couple of years until there are more on the market and the prices come down.

Valid points even though I disagree. Always found it a bit... odd that there is a considerable overlap between people worshipping the 42mm 5070 (with a tiny movement to boot) while poo-pooing the 5172.[/QUOTE]
What makes you think I'm a fan of 5070? We're agreed on small movement in an oversized case in it, though. |

According to my calculations my final cost for the 5172G would be around $62K and around $56K for the 5960/01G. At least that would help offset part of the expected valuation hit. |

I love the 5172G. Dresses down to wear with jeans. Easy to dress it up with a sport coat or suite and tie. I have it. It's a keeper.

Was playing around a little with prospective strap changes to the 5172G when this happened. Makes me wonder why PP hasn’t already released this.
