I avoid it like the plague. Ignorance is bliss. I guess I listen to CNBC halftime report but thats mostly just in the car running errands. My iPhone likes to tell me headlines regardless and if that doesn't cover it my mother will call me and parrot back whatever cnn told her today lol

I don’t think you’re kidding, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that approach. I take breaks for that reason but can never keep away for long from looking at the news.

Brian, this is a great question and one I was just thinking about too. I’m more interested in seeing what others have to say, but I have digital subscriptions to The Economist, NYT, and a few Australian news sites. Also, a nice looking Australian leftwing political and arts magazine we get delivered called The Monthly, which has solid writing and isn’t demoralisingly long.

Seems like this approach is more common today. Although I understand it I just find ignoring it to be more harmful than helpful. Ignorance rarely if ever makes anything any better and frankly I get the feeling there’s way too much ignorance to go around in todays world.

True.

Am sure we all realize in various countries their news is mainly gov-speak, so it helps if you better understand the why of what they want you to think. So yes, situation awareness helps free-thinkers better understand the leanings of each country's imposed ideology scheme.

Today's low 'news' viewership may be due to these leanings where they say one thing, then are proven incorrect only a day or two later as more 'truth and facts' come out.

We live in interesting times indeed.

My girlfriend turned on network news — it was either CBS or NBC — and I told her all the topics they would cover, then went for a run in Riverside Park. After the run, she was amazed and said they discussed all the “news” I told her they’d discuss. I told her it’s not actually news — it’s a recurring list of oligarch-approved and government-approved talking points and sociopolitical arguments, all at around the level of sophistication you’d expect from a stoned Oberlin freshman.

Sophistication is generally not their strongsuit imho, but obscuring and minimizing historic facts are. And yes, hiSTORY tends to repeat.

It is sad that one ideology seeks via force and coercion to unilaterally demand the remainder of the world to adhere to their (selfish) myopic schemes. So yes, understanding the reasoning behind their chosen 'evening news items' (while ignoring others) helps analyze possible future events.

I don't watch the news at all. I may skip headlines on Google news. If I want to see what my Government is doing, I will read the actual laws prepared and published by the Federal Register.

Otherwise, just the weather is all I check on a regular basis.

I read/watch many but often the evening news is the best, typically just lists the facts and then well, I use my own brain and think what I think about a given thing. I tend to avoid the talking heads that tell one what to think or believe, they have an agenda and its not politics/news at all, its simply making $$$.

No news is good news.

Watching the news today is the equivalent to gouging your eyes out with a butter knife.

I have a subscription to the New York Times. One of the reasons for my subscription is the fact that I'm addicted to the Wordle word game; that I found out about here!

We need a TRF Weekly News Drinking Game. Keywords to drink to.

By the time you get to the third commercial break filled with Big Pharma ads you'll be so plastered you won't care.

We also need video of wealthy 50+ year old Manhattanites at Lincoln Center, all crying on cue to a Ukrainian orchestra whose performers bravely escaped months before a single tank rolled in.

The System says they should cry tears of joy, so why wouldn’t they? The System made them rich and has always taken care of them in the past.
